Product Description

Manufacturer's Description
As the German war machine falls, two great nations rise to claim power. In the West, there is the United States, leader of the allied nations, and in the East lies the Soviet Union under communist rule. As both nations attempt to claim superiority, a new war is waiting around the corner; this time, the conflict will decide who will be the remaining superpower.

In addition to the four grand campaigns (1936, 1939, 1941 and 1944) of the original game, one extra scenario (1945) has been added. This new what if scenario features a continuation war between the United States and the Soviet Union. The time limit has also been extended to 1953 and additional warfare and diplomatic options have been included.A WWIII expansion to critically acclaimed Hearts of Iron II, Hearts of Iron 2: Doomsday includes the original game and improvements requested from the previous title's worldwide audience.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Stragety Game For Years To Come, 21 Jul 2006
By Wim Nelis "Wim" (Geel, Belgium) - See all my reviews

Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
How do you start describing a game that has so many beginning points and infinite exit points? You can't.... For example: if you decide to play the germans; will you research naval units so you can invade England? (operation Sealion) or do you research your armored units to race them across Russia? (operation Barbarossa) Will you ally yourself with Japan and risk getting involved in a war with the USA before you are ready?...etc, etc. So that's why I can't explain everything to you. It has so much depth, so many choices that I would exceed my alloted writing space. I have played all mayor nations several times and each has its peculiar traits; giving the game a huge replayability level. There are really very few annoying features in the game (though I get really pissed when I'm not able to airlift my paratroopers between two friendly provinces) and during the course of several months now, it did crash only once. I didn't regret buying Hearts of Iron 2 and I don't regret having bought this stand alone expansion.

5.0 out of 5 stars Truely fantastic, 18 May 2006

Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
Hearts of Iron 2 was tremendous, and it just gets better. An essential wargamers game and probably the finest strategy game so far. Please don't add a space dimension or I'll never be able to stop - at least at the moment I feel I might stop when I have played every country twice.

You just can't get bored it has such range and depth and the better you get at it the harder it gets.

I hated the music (always do) and it took ages to refine the messages to just those I wanted. It could probably do with something interactive like an advisor so that you have someone to talk to at 3am in the morning!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A very serious approach to WW2, 10 Mar 2007
By Joseph "the wargamer" (Palermo, Sicily) - See all my reviews
Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
If you are interested in a game that recreates pratically every detail that you can think of in simulating WW2 on a grand strategic scale, than this is probably the game for you. What you will certainly find abstracted in similar games here will be treated in every minute detail. You should be prepared for a very steep learning curve, as you master the minutie of combat, production, diplomacy, espionage, reserch and whatnot. On the positive side, this game allows you to take control of ANY country involved, not only the major players- so if time is a concern, you could try playing say Sweden and mantain things nice and quick. no other game on the subject gives you so much freedom of choice in selecting your country. Many of the subsystems that compose the game are very well done, I like in particular the way research and espionage is handled. I rate the fun level at only 4 stars because this is not a game you can expect to complete within a reasonable amount of time. It tends to drag on a bit too long. In this respect a faster and more fun could be obtained by playing "Strategic Command 2" or maybe the soon to be published "Making history". one complaint I have with the game are the rules, which are written in microscopic print (in order to mantain the rulebook in 132 pages ...!)and the lack of video resolution options. Other than that, I strongly suggest this game to any (very) serious wargamer, especially at this price. Nothing comes close, realism wise.
