Product Description

CD Description
The kings of Latino hip-hop compile the cream of their fourteen-year recording career on this best-of release. Cypress Hill exploded onto the scene in 1993 with their multi-platinum second album 'Black Sunday'. Their seven albums to date have seen them move from the sluggish style they pioneered - and which has been so influential - to encompass rap-metal and Jamaican dancehall. This album also features two brand new songs.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good introduction to one of the better rap groups..., 5 Mar 2006
By Mr. T. Speller "tomtedspeller" (London, Uk) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
Throughout their long career, Cypress Hill have been rightfully considered as pioneers in the rap and hip-hop scene, accorded the same reverence reserved for the likes of NWA, Public Enemy and Run DMC.

Their constant advocacy of marijuana use and legalisation was what first attracted notoriety, fortunately over time they have left a much better heritage musically. Their clever deployment of slow rolling bass and drum lines- a technique also used by Dr. Dre and Massive Attack- has become common place in rap. They were amongst the first to fuse rap with heavy metal and form “nu-metal”; and in more recent times they have integrated reggae and latino influences into their work. For all this they must be praised.

Greatest Hits from the Bong, therefore, offers a very good summary of their career: the dirty, grimy hip-hop of “How I Could Just Kill A Man” and “Hand On the Pump”, the classics “Insane In the Brain” and “I Ain’t Goin’ Out Like That”, the nu-metal of (Rock) Superstar, the salsa-tinged “Latin Thugs”. My only criticism is that they should have included more from their debut album (1992) and Black Sunday (1993), when they were really at their creative peak. But that is a small quibble. A good introduction to one of the better rap groups.

4.0 out of 5 stars EZ!, 27 Jan 2009
By Timo Upton (Stratford-upon-Avon) - See all my reviews
It's a greatest hits album, the obvious main quibbles people will have will go along the lines of what was missing and what needlessly there, however, it seems pointless with this record due to the striking brevity of the album, with a mere 15 songs covering the groups 7 or so studio albums and decade long career seems criminal and its hard to escape the absense of 'hits from the bong' after which the album is named, however, it is a good, if breif, look into cypress hill and will certainly satisfy those who are just curious about the band or simply want a slice of cypress in their itunes, but for the more devout fan the album will leave you feeling buzzed with anticipation but ultimately feeling cold. Although i'm yet to see it in amazon, HMV offers the album bundled with the 'still smokin' DVD which features 22 music videos and a live set all for £7 it's brilliant.
