Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Though he’s been coming up on the battle circuit for years, it was Sway’s highly-regarded mixtape This Is My Promo Vol. 1 that got him established as a prominent figure on the UK urban scene. Having recently recorded with The Streets and toured with Dizzee Rascal, Sway now brings his debut album. This Is My Demo smacks of class. The production--all put together by the man himself--is sophisticated and varied, shape-shifting between hip hop, two-step, r & b and rap and infused with subtle Afro-Caribbean touches and a great deal of humour.

Sway’s storytelling is sharp and he is more than capable of switching personas (one minute the English gent, next the streetwise rudeboy) and even his rhyming speeds but better than that--his gags are genuinely funny. Whether satirising fashion, poking fun at Kofi Annan or imagining embarrassing sexual moments with his girlfriend, he brings a lightness of touch to the game that’s eternally refreshing.--Paul Sullivan

CD Description

'This Is My Demo' is the first widely available album by MOBO award-winning north London MC/Producer, Sway Dasafo. By combining straight up hip-hop anthems with elements of grime,Sway has made an album that is as cutting edge musically asit is lyrically, with tales of London life told over a melting pot of sounds that truly reflect life in the capital. Includes the singles 'Little Derek' and 'Up Your Speed'.

4.0 out of 5 stars Should you believe the hype?, 7 Feb 2006
By A Customer
Sway arrives with this debut solo album under the burden of such labels as being the “next big thing” and the “biggest talent to arrive from the underground scene since Dizzee”. But is this hype deserved? If you’ve heard Sway’s previous 2 mixtapes you’ll quickly understand why the buzz was generated. But this brings us to the first hater point, which is there are a few tracks that have been lifted from the mixtapes (and a few familiar lyrics) and for the avid fan this disappointingly reduces the amount of orginial material. However, since winning the MOBO award Sway has picked up a much wider fanbase that are unlikely to have heard the mixtapes and therefore it understandable as to why he has chosen to include these tracks. The second very minor hater point is that the production on some tracks (namely Pretty Ugly Husband and Slo Down) is lacklustre and does not do his lyrical ability justice.

But on the flipside Sway does nothing to damage the current euphoria surrounding his much awaited debut solo. The lyrics, as expected, are sharp, intelligent, and witty and will often leave you reaching for that rewind button whilst he skilfully flips flows. The subject matter is varied and there’s not a weapon-toting-tales-from-the-hood tune so often and unrealistically described in much UK Hip-Hop. The production, a large part of which was done by promising young newcomer Shux, is generally very good and tends to steer more towards commercial Hip-Hop / RnB then UK grime, but this not only complements his style but is refreshing as the grime scene has a tendency to churn out similar-sounding melancholy beats.

So is the hype justified? Overall I would say yes. I’m not supporting this because he’s from the UK; I’m supporting this because he’s a very talented artist!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Doing Okay Indeed, 3 Mar 2006

(REAL NAME)
This cd is just wicked. I can realte in about a million ways with what dude is saying because a) my name too is Derrick b) my folks are Ghanian too c) I'm fed up with American nonsense calling itself hip hop. This is a massive breath of fresh air along with The Mitchells, Roll Deep and Kano. Wicked lyrics, tight beats, diverse subject matter from domestic vioence, downloading, people who dance too rowdy, loose girls, I could go on. Because of my Ghanian roots I also found the skits about MC Charlie Boy and his Brother Kofi hilairious. I've been playing it to every Ghanian I know. And just to show how wicked this album is... I have an English wife who listens to Madonna, Maroon 5 and Scissor Sisters yet guess which cd hasn't left the car stereo? I can't give a better endorsement than that!!! Little Derek is doing better than okay me thinks. Can't wait for album number 2.

4.0 out of 5 stars United States Of....What?, 13 Aug 2006
Forget US rap, buy this album. This album breathes fresh air into the UK grime scene, and blows US rap artists outta the water. To think that 50cent is one of the biggest grossing rap artists is shamefull, cause neither of his albums come close to the quality of this.

Often compared to dizzee rascal, but the lyrical quality of this album is so much more impressive. Listen to it 10 or 20 times and you still find rhymes that you aint heard and that blow your mind. Some of the production is lacking but that is only a minor complaint. After winning MOBO award Sway is becoming more recognised and this album shows he deserves to be recognised everywhere. Funnier skits than KanYe too! Give this album a chance yeah, it'll blow you away.

**** - Great lyrics, Great sound, Great!
