Prefuse 73, aka Scott Herren, wreaks digital havoc on slumbering rap fools. Last year he collaborated with a ton of friends and guests for Surrounded By Silence, a project that unfortunately seemed to collapse under its own weight. Now he’s back with the sparser, punchier Security Screenings, an album that’s being touted not as an official follow-up but merely a "transition".
Inspired by his treatment by airport security officials and the assorted traumas of an incessant international touring schedule in a post 9/11 world, Herren returns to his early period of diced-up hip hop beats and swirling melodies. Dark instrumentals represent black moods; distressed beats mirror nocturnal insanity and fragmented identities; dissonant horns describe the frustrations of long queues and even longer delays. It’s an abrasive outing and certainly moody in places but there’s enough sampled dialogue, alluring melody and futuristic beat science to keep the whole thing relatively buoyant.--Paul Sullivan
