Amazon.co.uk Review

Ridley Scott's glossy historical epic Gladiator revitalised the classic sword 'n' sandal genre, bringing both a modern pop-culture sensibility and state-of-the-art computer-generated special effects to what had seemed like a worn-out formula. Essentially a remake of Anthony Mann's stodgy 1964 Fall of the Roman Empire, Gladiator also borrows heavily from Saving Private Ryan in its stunning opening sequence, and employs Ridley's brother Tony Scott's rapid-fire editing style for the remarkably staged Colosseum fights. The overall effect is a hugely impressive but emotionally empty spectacle complemented by Hans Zimmer's bestselling but derivative score.

Synopsis

Ridley Scott (Blade Runner, Alien) transports Hollywood to second-century Rome in this rousing historical epic that proudly harkens back to such films as Ben-Hur and Spartacus. Russell Crowe plays Maximus, a Roman general who leads the troops in conquering Germania for the empire. When an ageing Marcus Aurelius (Richard Harris) tells Maximus that he'd like him to rule Rome once he's gone, a classic confrontation ensues between the brave and charming soldier who wants to return home to his wife, son, and farm and the jealous and conniving Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix), the emperor's only son, who is thirsty for power. Bought as a slave by the profiteering Proximo (Oliver Reed, in his last role), Maximus must kill or be killed in the ring, battling to save not only himself but the future of the very empire that he loves and honours. The film features a terrific battle sequence (that recalls the beginning of Saving Private Ryan), huge crowd scenes of thousands of people, and even a little romance, albeit mostly taboo. The impeccably choreographed gladiator scenes are violent yet thrilling, flashing by like lightning. Gladiator is a glorious spectacle filled with heart and soul.

5.0 out of 5 stars Roman General fights for Revenge and Honour, 28 Nov 2008

The Gladiator surpasses all expectations for a nights entertainment with Crowe, as Roman General Maximus, who delivers a perfect performance as a man driven by revenge, and also for bringing Oliver Reed back to life!

I would probably buy the 3 Disc Extended Special Edition 2005 to get all the extras and higher quality viewing.

If you enjoy watching Russell Crowe then you must see LA Confidential, also starring Kevin Spacey and Guy Pearce. If you enjoy the historical action drama then you must see Braveheart starring Mel Gibson.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gladiator, 7 May 2006
By John Corbett - See all my reviews

Hot off filming The Insider, Russell Crowe lost 40lbs of weight and built up his muscles to play thinking women's sex object Maximus, the Roman general turned gladiator, in Hollywood's first true Roman epic for over three decades. Exiled when his mentor, Caesar Marcus Aurelius (Richard Harris) dies and is succeeded by his power-hungry son, Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix), Maximus, now in exile, trains as a gladiator and swears his revenge - understandable when you consider that Commodus not only kicked Maximus out of the bosom of Rome and tried to kill him, but also had his family murdered.

As you would expect from director Ridley Scott, the movie is epic not only in scale but also in imagery, as the majesty that was Rome is re-created superbly on screen (much praise is due here to Scott's cinematographer, John Mathieson). But Scott doesn't lose sight of the human side of the story amid the computer trickery, brilliantly staged battle sequences, and spectacular sets, delivering a fascinating, grisly, and heroic tale. With skilled actors, most notably Crowe, a wonderfully preening Phoenix and, in his final role, Oliver Reed who sadly died during filming - his remaing scenes were generated using a stand-in and computer-enhanced filmwork.
