Album Description
The "Battalia" was a vocal/instrumental composition that was very much in fashion between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. It is designed to be music which attempts to represent and sometimes imitate the din of war and the phases of battle. It was largely entrusted to the trumpeters enrolled in the militia and the melodies incorporated are often based on the natural sounds of the trumpets which, as they did not have valves, had only a limited range of notes available to the average performer. The music is often adapted from fairly simple folk and dance tunes from the period. Of course these trumpet ensembles were also used to accompany municipal and church celebrations and there are example of this also featured on this new SACD (Hybrid) release.
The disc concludes with a section which intends to offer a real, historical setting to the preceding music, by incorporating the authentic sound of the clamour of arms. The weapons used in the battle are all faithful reproductions of weapons of the period.
