Amazon.co.uk Review

One of television’s best kept secrets, Mock The Week stands aside from the ongoing collection of panel quiz games by being both very, very funny, and consistently keeping its standards high.

The format certainly helps. Based on the principle of two teams going head to head in a quiz based on the week’s happenings, Mock The Week then promptly rips up the textbook by introducing all sorts of madness. Improvisation? Yup. A bit of role play? Yup. Lots of laughs? Absolutely. In short, take something like Have I Got News For You, mix in some elements of Whose Line Is It Anyway? and add in some incredibly funny panelists, and this gem of a show is the end result.

What really makes it though is not just the format, but the panelists themselves. Hosted by one of the funniest men on the planet, Dara O’Briain, Mock The Week then brings in the likes of Hugh Dennis, Russell Howard and the gut-wrenchingly funny Frankie Boyle. The mixture is perfect, and the show simply superb.

What’s more, this surprisingly lengthy DVD also brings in lots of material that even hardened fans of the show won’t have seen before. That surely makes Mock the Week: Too Hot For TV one of the must-have comedy discs of the last few years. And given the consistently high quality of the show, be prepared for more releases in the future too. Bring them on… --Simon Brew

4.0 out of 5 stars Better than Have I got news for you., 16 April 2008
By BXMAN2000 (Wiltshire, UK) - See all my reviews
There was a time when the best panel comedy show about politics was Have I got News for you. However from the creators of Whose Line Is It Anyway? is the great Mock the Week.

It is like a cross-breed of Have I got News for you and whose line it is anyway, but MTW is so much better than these two at its best combined. The DVD gives you the twenty best bits that are unedited and unseen on BBC2. They also give us three extended cuts of the best episodes in their recent series (Late 2007.) There are five comedians that are regular panelists. They are Dara O,Briain who is the marvollous presenter, Hugh Dennis who is funny especially at making voices, andy Parsons who is funny when he gets going and Russell Howard the cheeky Bristolian who is great at making animal jokes but can be a bit slow. Yet the star of the show really does shine and that is the scottish comedian Frankie Boyle who is politically incorrect but very hilarious in doing so. There are two other comedians that appear on this show which are not regulars. These include David Mitchell, Jo Caulfield and Ed Byrne.

However the DVD does feel short and I would have prefered a complete series on boxset than the best of. Also if you are not very tolerant of bad language then this is definetly not for you. I do hasten to add though that this is well worth your money as this genuinely guarantees laughs.

3.0 out of 5 stars Rapid fire jokes, 7 Oct 2008
This is British stand up at it's best on TV. It's very similar to "Whose line is it anyway?", not surprising since Dan Patterson created both of them, but this is more spoken comedy and is topical. Most of the jokes are funny, if you catch them. Be warned if you're not British or aware of British politics some of the jokes will go over your head as they make jokes of the leader of the Liberal Democrat party. The best bits were "bad things to say ...", eg things you never hear announced over the tannoy.

My biggest disappointment is that there are no subtitles, which means when the comedians are going at full pelt it's difficult to hear what was said (hence the 3 stars). Several times, I had to rewind to try to get the jokes. In this day and age, there should be no reason not to include a subtitle track, especially as one was included on the original broadcast.

5.0 out of 5 stars How Does The BBC Do It?, 27 Sep 2008
By Steven Stewart "Critic Extraordinaire" (steveo.stewart@hotmail.co.uk) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)    (VINE VOICE)
The BBC will always be known in England for its topical comedy panel shows. Never Mind The Buzzcocks, QI and Have I Got News For You are but a few great comedy panel shows. When Mock The Week first came along I didn't have any sort of scepticism relating to it as I knew that with Dara O'Briain at the helm and Frankie Boyle on the panel it was bound to be hysterical. It was not only hysterical but pants wetting controversy as when you give Frankie Boyle a platform, you're bound to be offended somehow. He's the ultimate king of offensive comedy and although he touches on things like race and sexuality, he does it in a way that to some would be considered racist or homophobic but those people still laugh their heads off.

For those not entirely familiar then think Whos Line is it Anyway? crossed with Have I Got News For You. It takes improv comedy and mixes it with that weeks hot news topics, generally political though. If you've seen the show on BBC TV then you know that they allow a lot of full on jokes to make it to TV, so I'm promising the DVD will be that more offensive.

Great show and a worth it DVD.
