Product Description

Synopsis
This version of Jane Austen's fiercely beloved novel has the daunting task of living up not only to the classic book, but also to the excellent 1995 miniseries of the same name. Yet 2005's PRIDE & PREJUDICE is up to the task, thanks to lively pacing, a witty script, an excellent cast, and clever direction from British newcomer Joe Wright. The surprisingly still-relevant story follows the five Bennet sisters as they deal with suitors and love, as their mother desperately schemes to marry them off advantageously. Sweet-tempered beauty Jane (Rosamund Pike) develops feelings for the equally amiable and extremely wealthy Mr. Bingley (Simon Woods), but forces conspire to keep them apart while Lizzie (Keira Knightley) finds herself first appalled by, but gradually drawn to, Bingley's aloof, intelligent, and socially awkward friend, Mr. Darcy (Matthew MacFayden). The movie, at just over two hours, is forced to cut and condense a number of the book's subplots, and at times it tries to heighten the drama of certain scenes. But, for the most part, it's as faithful to the spirit of the original as time and cinematic convention allow. The tremendous supporting cast includes Brenda Blethyn as Mrs. Bennet and Donald Sutherland as her wry, withdrawn husband; Jena Malone as teenage twit Lydia; Judi Dench, effortlessly haughty and imperious, as Lady Catherine de Bourg; and Tom Hollander, who steals every scene he's in as the ludicrously pompous and awkward Mr. Collins. The movie's script, adapted by Deborah Moggach, manages to be proto-feminist without becoming anachronistic and, like the novel, it is incisive about the class politics and gender inequalities of the day.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great adaption, 8 Feb 2006
Those who really love Jane Austen's book should be a little cautious if they think this adaption is going to be faithful to it. However, those with an open mind for visual adaptions and a love for romantic period dramas will love it. For me, this was a beautful adaption of the central theme of Pride and Predjudice, with all the sub plots neatly trimmed to fit into 2 hours. I loved the more earthy and less refined way it was filmed, allowing us to see more passion than the 1995 television adaption allowed. There will inevitably be comparisons to the 1995 adaption - but there shouldn't be. This was obviously filmed by a director with a very different perception of the novel and I for one, preferred his vision of it. The only drawbacks to this film are that some of the scenes do feel very rushed - almost as if the actors have been told to say their lines really fast; this does mean that some scenes that us true romantics love most of all, can leave the viewer feeling as if the scenes lack a bit of emotional depth sometimes. For example, the scene where Mr Darcy proposes to Lizzy in the rain - a wonderfully set scene, beautifully located in the rain with simmering passion in abundance, but the lines seem hurried rather than passionate and the viewer (who will always read reality between the lines of romance) will wonder whether Mr Darcy took to chasing lizzy through forests and hills before startling her in the palladian arch!
All in all, my only real concern with this film is how the director could have understood the book so well, but could have failed to realise why it is read so widely. I draw this opinion from the final scene, or lack of it. Where is it Joe? (and those of you who are looking forward to seeing the extra US scene where they kiss - prepare for a cheesy dissapointment, not a classy romantic conclusion which conveys the sublimity of such a moment). It has to be said, the 1995 version got the end right. It's all in the conclusion!

1.0 out of 5 stars oh dear!, 13 May 2006
By Han "Han" (Surrey, UK) - See all my reviews
I've never watched a film that I've hated so much! Please don't buy this.
You have to be pretty brave to attempt an adaptation of such a fantastic and well loved novel - and the BBC managed it so well. But I'm even tempted to think that the scriptwriter for this version read the novel in secondary school and never bothered to think of it again. IT'S NOTHING LIKE THE BOOK!! The director has completely missed the point!!!
Darcy's an apologising idiot you feel sorry for from the outset (instead of loathing as you do in the book) half the other characters have been chopped out and as for Keira, sorry girl, but you are no Elizabeth Bennett. There's making a character your own and then there's making a really bad character.
The Bennets are pretty common; dirty, sprawling themselves over the furniture, pigs running through their house - nothing like the "Gentleman's family" in the novel. There's no sense of morality, which is integral to the whole Elizabeth/Darcy relationship. The language is modern day, with the occasional long word thrown in to make it look period! I'm also pretty certain the majority of the characters wouldn't have spoken with American accents in the novel...
All in all I was so disappointed - I forced myself to watch it through to the end, just in case it any way resembled the correct ending. Characters are missing, whole scenes are cut (and not just any old scenes, but the important ones that reveal the very reasoning behind the plot) and except for Judy Dench and Brenda Blethin (clearly the only two who have read the novel) the cast is terrible!! (Donald Sinden's version of Mr Bennett- what's that all about?!)
Sorry, but it's a big 'no' from me. If you love the story, please don't ruin your memories of it with this.
