Football Manager 2006 (Xbox 360) Review, 19 April 2006

Football Manager 2006 for Xbox 360 is the first console conversion of a much beloved series that is without question the greatest management game in the business bar none. Developed by Sports Interactive (recently aquired by SEGA, this is the same development team who created the Championship Manager series) so you know that this will only be the very best.
Football Manager 2006 for Xbox 360 is exactly the same as its PC brother in terms of content and its completely realistic playability and transfer market systems. Some of you (myself included) were concerned that Sports Interactive would be unable to replicate the sheer depth and quality that the PC version contains, do not fear, everything is hear and more besides thanks to the sheer power of the Xbox 360 and making usage of the additional 20GB hard disk. The game is completely up to date from the January transfer window so all the latest transfer and managerial changes have been made.
The speed of the game (often a source of frustration for PC gamers) is lightening fast, you can run up to 10 leagues simultaneously and without a drop in game speed which means that its a far more fast paced yet still deeply engaging and challenging experience.
The objective of the game (for those that dont know) is to manage a team from over 50 leagues in world football and lead them to the very top, be it Manchester United, Reading, Real Madrid or even Accrington Stanley.
The user interface has been greatly overhauled in comparrison to the PC version, the lack of mouse can be a hindrance but to be fair to Sports Interactive the new system (which relies on the Xbox 360's shoulder buttons to navigate menus) will become second nature to you in time.
Multiplayer allows users (up to 8) to take part in a league or a cup competition over Xbox Live with achievement points and world leaderboard rankings up for grabs for the victors.
The game will be constantly updated through Xbox Live by Sports Interactive thanks to downloadable content or automatic updates, this could range from new signings during the transfer window or a complete new overhaul of the leagues (who won, who got promoted and who got relegated etc)
This game is absolutely fantastic and will be a sleeper hit for the Xbox 360, if you own it on the PC then I'd still recommend it for your Xbox 360, its as every bit as detailed but has more under its bonnet thanks to the power of the Xbox 360, if your a first time buyer its a must.

The players walk out, greeted with the smell of cut grass, and the sound of jeers from the supporters. There's no better occasion than this - the World Cup final. England's chance for glory. Well, it won't happen in real life will it, so why not pop Footy Manager into your disk tray? After all, it won't be exiting it for a long, long time.
Football Manager always has been the number one management simulation available, taking the wind from Championship Manager's sails when it was first released back in 2004. When the sequel was released in 2005 for the PC, an Xbox 360 showing was inevitable. We all knew it. What we didn't yet know is that the console version would actually be superior to it's PC brethren.
Firstly, Football Manager includes over 280,000 players and over 5000 teams in 50 countries. Phew. Now that's football. Plus, you don't just choose where they play on the pitch and then sit back, relax and watch them - you are required to use sophisticated tactics, and if they do not work well, change them around, over and over again, until perfection. It's not a fun game, let's get that clear, but when was the last time a simulation was fun? In fact, Football Manager can be a really frustrating game, often allowing you to see your team through to a major final, only to be jipped to the trophy in the dying seconds. Then, after much head butting the wall, you'll sit down and carry on playing. That's the problem. Football Manager is amazingly addictive, even to the point where your awful Sunderland (for David) side is still playing matches at 2.30 in the morning. All of us who own the game have been there.
If you're looking for graphics, a management simulation is never the place to come, unless you love screens packed with text and numbers. In saying that, the 2D match engine actually works very well, suiting the game's style perfectly. It's all balanced out, because if there was a 3D match engine, it probably wouldn't be anything special (see LMA Manager), and would probably affect the depth of the game (see LMA Manager again).
But the game does have it's bad points. The controls are difficult to get used to, probably because football management games are suited to a mouse and keyboard. Still, once you get to know these tricky button combos, it will probably have improved you DOA4 skills... what? I mean, navigating the menu's will be second nature.
Another weak point is that the online modes are rather tricky to get into, with poor servers. The leagues really don't work, as you are sometimes waiting ages until a member of the league finally decides to move onto the next menu. Cups can be a laugh though, at it's prime with eight teams.
In the end, Football Manager is king of the simulations once again, and any true football fan will appreciate it's quality... so if you consider yourself a true footy fan, mix some Red Bull, coffee and Lucozade together, and prepare for a long night.

The first release of Football Manager for the Xbox 360, this edition comes complete with all of the features from Football Manager on PC, including training, the 2d match engine, full rules for all leagues and player data for 250,000 players from 50 countries.
Negociate with the board of directors for better contracts, inproved player wage budgets, stadium expansions and more. Get into the heads of your teammates by talking them through half-time events to evaluate their performance, and also manage morale even further with a new Player Interaction feature. Training schedules and stat details have been made easier to read through, new referee profiles give you insight into who is watching your game, and player position indicators new feature preferred moves for watching trends to watch for in player performance.
Xbox Live is great .
5/5 Best football game out .
