A damn good Debut, 5 Mar 2006
If there was one anticon release I've been anticipating, it's this one. It's been a long time to wait for Jel to finally do something entirely on his lonesome. And yes it is very very good. The beats are good, and lack the obscurity of other anticon artists, remaining interesting but danceable, and they layer under and over samples perfectly, so that every song on this LP is perfectly put together and a solid piece of production. Furthermore, quite often a real sense of playfulness comes across, particularly with tracks like Chipmunk Technique and Thrashin, where his playing with the decks is superb and clever. The only criticism I would level at this album is a lack of cohesion. It seems like he had too many ideas to stick to just one (and in the hit and miss world of underground and abstract hip hop, I can't blame him for it). The first song, a cracking anti-SUV hip hop number, assagues into all day breakfast, a slow and ambient piece, which winds it's way into No Solution, a crackling and dark slow piece. All three are good, but don't necesserily fit well together. The more traditional hip hop tracks sound out of place and the Trip Hoppy All Around really sticks out like a sore thumb. It's not enough to ruin the album, of course, it just means that I find I have to listen to individual tracks rather than listen to it all at once. Overall, whether he is creating a gelatinous soundscape with syrupy beats or a fast paced danceable piece of scratch hip hop, he's making something special
