Synopsis

A team of scientists and military personnel is dispatched to the distant Pegasus galaxy to explore the remnants of the Lost City of the Ancients, also known as Atlantis in this STARGATE SG-1 spin-off series. The Ancients were an advanced human race that initially created the Stargate network, and diplomat Dr. Elizabeth Weir (Torri Higginson) and pilot Major John Sheppherd (Joe Flanigan) head the international squad that is sent to investigate. The team arrives at Atlantis to find the city abandoned and their ship permanently stranded, unless they can find a power source to get themselves home to earth. They make contact with a brave but primitive native civilisation as well as with the evil Wraith, a species that feeds on fear and, it quickly becomes clear, poses a threat to human life everywhere. Sheppard's brash, instinctive nature contrasts with the calm thoughtfulness of Dr. Weir, and their team is rounded out by Sheppard's second-in-command Lt. Aidan Ford, witty Scottish doctor Carson Beckett, Pegasus native leader Teyla Emmagen, and inimitable scientist Rodney McKay. Episodes include: 'The Siege - Part 3', 'The Intruder', 'Runner' and 'Duet'.

5.0 out of 5 stars Season 2 - Off To A Good Start, 5 Jan 2006
By Mr. M. D. J. Allen "mike_allen_uk" (United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The first four episodes of Season 2 are some of the best so far this Season.

The first episode "The Siege: Part III" follows on where the Season 1 two-parter finale "The Siege: Part I & Part II" left you. We are introduced to two new characters in this episode and the Special Effects are truly amazing.

"The Intruder" is an ok episode, it uses the same idea that was used in a Season 4 episode of Stargate SG-1, but adds some neat twists to the episode. Some comical moments as well.

"Runner" introduces us to our new team member - Ronan Dex. "Runner" is basically what Ronan is, and also in this episode we encounter the MIA Lt. Ford. Also Stargate SG-1 fans - look out for a character from the SG-1 universe who will be appearing in a few episodes this season.

"Duet" is the funniest episode made on Stargate Atlantis to date. This episode shows what a wonderful talented actor David Hewlett is, but also highlights on a whole what a great show Atlantis is.

Hopefully all these episodes will have audio commentaries, and also a few special features on the making on these episodes.

Overall - some excellent episodes on this first DVD, which I will purchase as soon as its available to buy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Promising!, 6 April 2006
By Mr. T. Brandon "timmy88" - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Stargate Atlantis Season Two starts with the third part of a trilogy of episodes. Because of this what may have been a brilliant episode was slightly confusing for me, having not seen the first season. The second episode was similarly disappointing as they, admittedly openly, ripped off an episode of Stargate SG1, which felt very by the book, however it did give me a chance to grasp each characters personality and get into the show as a whole. The third episode Runner was a welcome change, this episode was brilliant and gave me hope for the rest of the season, it was funny, and dramatic what I like best from my TV. Duet, the fourth episode, raised my opinion even further as I witnessed what was pretty much a purely comical episode. If the rest of the season continues to improve at this rate we will be in for a treat.

With a commentary per episode and two featurettes this DVD works hard to fill its space. Each commentary was a good listen the best two being on the last two episodes, the references to Lord of the Rings, Serenity and many other recent genre classics not going amiss. The featurettes, mission directives for each of the first two episodes, gave lots of behind the scenes insight, with some cast participation. These added insight help to improve my enjoyment of the more disappointing episodes of this quartet. Though faltering for me at the start this season of Atlantis looks to be a good one and the DVD gives you extra depth with a high amount of extras for a TV DVD.
