Bought for my son, a rapidly-developing tuba player. The Vaughan Williams concerto was the main draw but this has proved to be a revelation for several reasons. Such wonderful music for this ungainly brass tube! The Gregson is a terrific piece in purely musical terms (as is the VW) without needing to make any concessions for the unusual soloist. All four pieces are worth hearing and Gavin Sutherland and the Royal Ballet Sinfonia show (once again) that they are a first rate outfit of skilled and sensitive musicians. James Gourlay is an acknowledged master and certainly proves it here with agile, musical playing. The recording is as good as one could wish for and the price amazingly low (as usual with Naxos). A great and original addition to their catalogue.
