It's rare that a recording demonstrates so clearly the argument of the notes it comes with. This one is remarkable. The thesis is that Hasse provided a structure on which his performers could, through their virtuosity, create the affects that would charm and move their audience; while Handel wanted greater influence over the affects, and so chose to exert a stronger control over how his singers performed. At first, I thought the disc would be worthy but a little dull (as I must confess I found her 'bel canto' disc after the stunning Farinelli one) - Genaux sings the Handel pieces very well, but somehow seems constrained. But just listen to how she spreads her wings once the gilded cage is opened in the first (or any other) of the Hasse pieces, and she is once again given scope to make her own story from the music, rather than re-telling Handel's. That is when Genaux sounds, again, like the virtuoso of the Farinelli disc, stunning but always with a story to tell, never just virtuosic. This really is a 'game of two halves': the first is beautiful but a little cold, the second is when this CD takes wing. Worth buying for the Hasse pieces alone, and for the real insight into the way different composers approached writing for their singers - though you do get lovely Handel singing too!

I have to agree with the previous reviewer - Genaux's voice really takes flight in the Hasse pieces, they are truly glorious. You will want to immediately repeat the stunning final aria from 'La Scusa'. Genaux sings the Handel pieces well too in her tangy mezzo soprano but (for me) there are better versions around of the 'Alcina' (Maite Beaumont) and 'Orlando' (Nathalie Stutzmann) arias. The Hasse arias are gorgeous though and well worth five stars on their own. Now we need a couple more complete opera recordings from this composer (and Porpora etc etc).
