Amazon.co.uk Review
When a young Dutch husband discovers that his wife has gone missing during their return to Holland from a bicycling trip in France, he begins a three-year search that forms the basis of this unsettling psychological thriller from 1988, originally titled Spoorloos. The missing woman's whereabouts remain a mystery, but the film provides an early introduction to her abductor, a seemingly normal family man whose domestic tranquillity hides a meticulous, methodical madness. As the despondent husband advertises all over France and Holland for his missing wife, this game of cat-and-mouse escalates into a strategy of psychological horror, revealing certain facts and merely suggesting others to create an intense atmosphere of dread and anticipation. A film that Alfred Hitchcock would certainly have admired, The Vanishing leads to an unforgettable conclusion that's sure to send chills down your spine. Ironically, this film's director, George Sluizer, also made the inferior 1993 American remake starring Keifer Sutherland and Jeff Bridges. --Jeff Shannon

5.0 out of 5 stars Blown Away!, 27 April 2000
By A Customer
I beg anyone who may be put off by the fact this film is in French to reconsider as it is without doubt a modern classic. The stroy line about a man obsessed with breaking human nature is first class and the acting superb, thrown in with an mesmorising ending which will leave you shaking! This is one of the rare films which can both entertain and really make you think. Truly first class.

5.0 out of 5 stars A film that homes in on your worst fears, 21 May 2000
By A Customer
I saw this film a few years ago - Channel 4 recommended it - and it lived up to their crit. Even Time Out rated it! This one of those films whereby you don't want to go up to bed on your own, especially if the stair lights are off. A really creepy film. It will keep you awake at night. Wonderful. What Nemesis is to roller-coasters, The Vanishing is to horror/suspense films. It's all in the mind ...

5.0 out of 5 stars a minor masterpiece, 6 Sep 2008
By son of haggart (scotlondia) - See all my reviews
This film is best viewed without reading a plot synopsis or spoilers of any sort. Don't, at any cost, watch the re-make (amazingly by the same director) with Jeff Bridges, even if like my wife you think he's cute.

Nicely paced, mesmerizing in it's build-up, it draws you in to a desperate situation where the lead characters actions are understandable and yet open him up to trouble

A great film.

Not for those of a nervous disposition, as they used to say on the beeb.
