3.0 out of 5 stars ... and found too light, 27 Dec 2008
By J. Severidt "jornfin" (Rovaniemi, Finland) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
John Storgårds is the Finnish Gidon Kremer. A violin virtuoso of great skill and a respected conductor and leader figure with an insatiable appetite for new music, even New Music. Men like him are needed, if we don't want to listen to the Viennese classics EXCLUSIVELY until the end of our lives.
What he does with (to?) the Mozart concerto here, though, is not to my liking. In a word, I find it too light. Too playful. (Okay, that's two words...) Mozart is often characterized thus: Light and playful. Nevertheless, in the light of his late symphonies, the violin concerts 3-5, the piano concerts 20+ (not to mention the Requiem) we clearly cannot reduce him to that!
I've tried and tried again, and I do have an open mind (and ear) for new readings producing new angles from which to view the work, but this does little for me.
Three stars because I'd never heard of Molter (and, though I can live happily without him, I always appreciate something new) and because the sound quality is very good. Nevertheless, I cannot in good faith recommend this.
