Given that Carter's harmony has never had a great sense of resonance or sensuality it's a surprise that the piano has proven an effective vehicle for his musical language. The much earlier Piano Concerto is one of Carter's undoubted hits and he repeats the success in 'Dialogues' which is a mini piano concerto in all but name.This work held me captivated when it was first done at the Queen Elizabeth Hall and it's great to have it on CD so soon.Yes,it's the familiar hard as nails musical language but this piece simply 'clicks' in a way that something like the 'ASKO' concerto resolutely doesn't.'ASKO' doodles along in a rather unyielding manner but 'Dialogues' has a tremendous urgency and vitality.Strongly recommended for Dialogues
