Amazon.co.uk Review

Cologne-based artists Burnt Friedman (one half of Flanger) and Jaki Liebezeit (former Can percussionist) have a mutual fascination with "non-Western" rhythm structures. This second instalment of their Secret Rhythms project sees the duo continue their curious explorations of rhythmic time signatures beyond the "traditional" or at least ubiquitous (in Western culture) 4/4 format, addressing all kinds of styles and syncopations and flirting with world music and jazz along the way. The songs featured here are playful and naturally off-kilter, steering away from the wilful intellectualism of past Friedman/Liebzeit-related projects. Guitarist Tim Motzer, vibraharpist Morten Grønvad, bass-player Daniel Schroeter, singer David Sylvian and guitarist Joseph Suchy are drafted in to add texture, melody and harmony to the hypnotic structures, helping create an album that’s both mystical and mellow – an ideal yet very idiosyncratic "chill out" option in fact. --Paul Sullivan

CD Description

This is the second volume of the almost-too-good-to-be-truecollaboration between producer/keyboardist Burnt Friedman (of the electronica outfit Flanger) and drummer Jaki Leibezeit (from the seminal Krautrock band Can). SECRET RHYTHMS, VOL. 2 is more subtle than its predecessor, but that doesn't detract from its evocative, experimental sound-tapestries. Groove-based percussion lines, keyboard textures, guitars, clarinets, and other instruments create entrancing, ambient sonic events that work their power slowly but effectively. Guestappearances from David Sylvian and guitarist Tim Molzer only serve to enhance the experience.

4.0 out of 5 stars mellow and thoughtful, 22 Feb 2007
By Nelkin (London, England) - See all my reviews
I first heard of Burnt Friedman because of his work with David Sylvian on the Blemish remixes and the excellent Nine Horses project. The general feel of this album is quite similar to those works, except that with former Can drummer Jaki Liebezeit also involved the rhythmic element is naturally in the foreground of the mix more often. Among other musicians involved in the project, particular mention should go to clarinettist Hayden Chisholm and bassist Daniel Schroeter (both of whom were also involved with the Nine Horses album). The album as a whole blends electronic and acoustic instruments to achieve a very interesting and varied palette of sounds. The overall mood is mellow chillout, with occcasional bursts of dysfunctional 'glitchy' rhythm sounds.

Sylvian fans will enjoy hearing his voice on track 3, 'The Librarian', an alternate mix of the final song on Snow Borne Sorrow. It's rather similar, but with a sparser arrangement and some drum improvisation prominent in the mix. I must say, I prefer the Nine Horses version, but this is OK too. There is also a Sylvian connection on the first track, 'Sikkerhed', which is a re-recorded instrumental version of 'The Day the Earth Stole Heaven', also from Snow Borne Sorrow. Here, as a predominantly acoustic piece, it has a nice relaxed feel that sets the tone for the album very well, and segues perfectly into the second track 'The Sticks' (generally the music on this album is seamless, with songs blending effortlessly into one another).

The best thing on the album, for my money, is the fifth track 'Niedrige Decken'. All the best elements of the album combine on this number to produce a splendidly hypnotic piece with elements of jazz and funk and a vaguely demented-sounding acoustic guitar. The clarinet is also excellently used on this track, giving it a warm feel that makes it perfect for a balmy summer evening.

Unfortunately the album seems to me to disappear into itself a little towards the end. The varied textures and melodies of the earlier tracks fade away to be replaced with some rather monotonous and introverted-sounding drum experiments which don't really hold my attention too well. Every time I listen to this album I enjoy it for about half an hour, and then kind of forget that I'm listening to it for the remaining fifteen minutes or so.

Anyhow, notwithstanding that, it's well worth a listen if you're interested in the contemporary avant-garde of popular music; also, if you've heard of Friedman from his involvement with Sylvian's music and want to find out more, you could do a lot worse than start here. For the apparent self-indulgence of the last few tracks I knock off a star. But it's still an intriguing piece of work, well worth a listen.
