2.0 out of 5 stars A profound disappointment from a (normally) magnificent conductor of Bruckner, 13 Aug 2009
I came to this performance with high expectations. I had heard Wand give an imposing performance of the 8th at the Proms in 1992, and his Berlin Philharmonic 4th (1998) is among the finest Bruckner performances I have ever heard on CD. But the performance on this DVD left me profoundly disappointed. At first I thought the tubby, rather dull and opaque sound quality was to blame, but no: just listen to even a few bars of Furtwängler's performances of this symphony, in poor mono sound, to hear how the music can blaze! This performance blazes only very rarely. Much of the playing is cautious, four-square, even timid, with a lack of incisiveness and a disastrous lack of forward momentum. The resulting slackness of tension fatally undermines both the coherence of the music and the listener's interest. Not recommended. To hear the 8th truly alive, turn instead to Furtwängler, either in 1944 (VPO) or in 1949 (BPO). The 1949 recording is heard to best advantage in the recent Audite set of Furtwängler's complete RIAS recordings.
