3.0 out of 5 stars Casual Gamers Beware, 25 Feb 2006
By J. Anderson "MrTheFish" (Scotland) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Don't be fooled by the hype, this is nothing if not a 24/7 grind, and a deceptively complicated one at that.
Traditional level grinders will shoot themselves in the foot here, because while it's easy to level your character, it's hard to level your skills, and the larger the difference between mob level and skill level the harder it is to boost them.

What's this mean?

Well basically, it means you can powerlevel pretty easily killing mobs over and over and over, it's not so much of a chore as in other games. But if you do, you will soon find yourself with a level 30 character and a series of level 1 or 2 skills. Which means you are going to be annihilated by the first opposing faction player that comes along. It really requires massive amounts of time to level not only your character but all your skills (and since you can have pretty much every skill in the game from level 1, minus a few class/race skills.....)

The game interface is rather clunky and I found it quite hard to adapt to, with several quickslot bars similar to WoW, though you can't put the same skill/item in more than one slot, which kind of sucks when you are used to multiple quickslot bars configured for different situations (and maybe have health pots on each one, or your most used attacks on each one). Movement in the world is a pain in the behind, requiring a left mouse click to move you to whichever spot you clicked on, or manual movement with the cursor keys (though moving diagonally doesn't seem to work), and in the heat of battle its easy to become confused and go wandering off in completely the wrong direction.

On the plus side, the graphics are amazing, though I admit I have a high end system and all graphical settings maxed out. Character details is extraordinary, and as previously stated, the armor/weapon visuals are stunning. But as good as you think they are, just wait until you see those MAU's (big giant robots, huzzah!). The music is quite wonderful too, very Final Fantasy-esque (as indeed the visuals are too).

Beautiful visuals, beautiful music, awkward interface and above all, NOT for the casual gamer.

1.0 out of 5 stars Nice looks, shame about the interface, 27 Feb 2006
Graphically RF Online is stunning. The character models are beautifully rendered and the gameworld looks amazing. Unfortunately as a game, rather than a visual treat, RF Online is crippled with an ancient user interface that wouldnt have looked out of place on an early MegaDrive title. The controls are mouse point and click to move, and the Function keys to trigger attacks, a cumbersome layout which cannot be remapped. WASD movement is offered as an alternative but, even with this turned on, character movement feels clumsy and leaden compared to other more responsive games, and you are still stuck with those clunky Function keys for your attacks. The Chat window is tiny, cannot be resized, and generally lacks any customization options. There is also a distinct lack of content for a game of the MMOG genre, with most of the action based around the PvP aspects of the gameplay, although more content may come along with future updates for any players brave enough to stick with it that long. On the whole RF Online failed to impress this particular player, and with a monthly subscription fee in excess of £10 (including tax) to play, comes across as a very lucklustre package despite its graphical gloss.

1.0 out of 5 stars My review of RF Online after 1 month, 22 Mar 2006
By Mr. Rj Welsh "eranu-uvavu" (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I have played this game for one month now and to be honest it pretty much sucks.

The pros - Allows large scale PvP. Set in a futuristic unique scenario and erm thats about it.....
The cons - Absolutely awful control system. Interface looks to have been created from pre school drawings. It does have a problem with ATI video cards which can only really be overcome by lowering some settings which greatly lowers the visual effect. Game is almost exclusively grind based as many korean based games are. Very very repetative and almost no content.

I have to say i was extremely dissapointed in this game. There are much better mediocre games than this.
