Synopsis

Former engineer Shane Carruth announces himself as a force to watch with 'Primer', his first film. Carruth wrote, directed, edited, produced, photographed, scored, and stars in the film, which won the Grand Jury Prize at the 2004 Sundance Film Festival. He plays Aaron, who, with his business partner and best friend, Abe, experiments with a device that seems to have more power than they could ever have imagined. Playing with batteries, refrigeration, and other techniques and materials in Aaron's garage, they discover that their machine just might have the ability to move back in time. Originally dealing with Weebles figures and wristwatches, Aaron and Abe are soon considering making a box large enough to transport a human being - with remarkable results. An indie hit, 'Primer' was made for about seven thousand U.S. Dollars. Carruth shot the film with a purposefully grainy look, as if it were made in the 1970s. The retro feel works well with the futuristic elements of the story, which lead Abe and Aaron to question reality, truth, and their own physical and mental being. Because he learned about film on his own without going to film school or making any previous shorts, Carruth brings a freshness to the genre that is invigorating, with unexpected plot twists and complex narratives that invite multiple viewings. 'Primer' is an unusual, unique, challenging, and thoroughly entertaining movie.

5.0 out of 5 stars Film making at its best, 17 Mar 2006
This has to be one of the best movies of any genre to come out of the US for sometime. The simplicity of its presentation (a sci-fi film with no special effects!) contrasts with the complex, sometimes rapid fire dialogue which at times is rich in jargon and engineering terminology. This film will demand your full and complete attention. However don't let this put you off as the acting is superb and conveys the tensions and situations portrayed without needing to dumb down the dialogue to pander to the lowest common denominator as so much Hollywood fodder does these days (the big players would probably have hijacked the voiceover monologue to explain every twist and turn). I was fortunate enough to catch this on the big screen on its limited UK release and left the theatre knowing I had witness something very cool, very different and in need of at least one more viewing to understand the plot line completely. The DVD is a worthy edition to any collection and I defy anyone to watch this once and not want to watch it again and again so they can absorb all the minute details and come to fully realise the plot and the implications for the characters.

5.0 out of 5 stars You will HAVE to see it more than once, 7 Mar 2006
By A Customer
I've only once before been moved to share my feelings about a movie via an Amazon review but this film is a rare genuine "must-see" for all serious cinema lovers. I'd also recommend it for DVD purchase or rental as it is a film that greatly rewards re-watching. In fact, you're unlikely to get all that much of it on a first viewing.

Whether a film should necessarily have to be re-watched several times in order to be understood is an interesting discussion point, but this film earns its reward of our time and attention (it helps that the run-time of the film itself is only 72 minutes). Many people seem to be comparing this film to 'Donnie Darko' but I would make the point that 'Darko' was much more wilfully enigmatic, open to various conflicting interpretations, none of them fixed or 'correct' whereas 'Primer' does have a scientific/narrative 'explanation' albeit one that is difficult to grasp. The two different commentaries (Director and Cast/Crew) are illuminating, another reason for buying the DVD.

I would not classify myself as a science fiction fan but the intelligence and rich characterisation here take this film to a superior level. (The story of the film itself, an authentic "indie" film home-produced, budget financed, edited on the Director's home Mac, is a great tale.) Frankly it defies explanation within a couple of paragraphs and I'm not going to attempt it. Suffice to say it's one of the very best films of the 21st Century so far.

5.0 out of 5 stars A modern masterpeice. A legend already., 19 Feb 2006
Primer is already the stuff of modern legend. The debate surrounding this film - both it's content, and making - is already far too deep to go in to here.
It is a true sci-fi film. After I watched it I was changed.
Most people may think it is a terrible film. But small proportion will be sure it is one of the best things they have ever seen.
It is one of the few things of recent times that has reaffirmed my belief that yes, there are still people out there more intelligent than me, and they are making ultra-low budget sci-fi films!
Stunning.
