Product Description

Description

Martyn Joseph is one of the most acclaimed singer-songwriters of the time and Deep Blue is already receiving critical praise in acoustic-rock and folk circles.

Album Description

"DEEP BLUE" is Martyn's sixteenth studio album (with his live collections, collaborations with `FFA' and `Best Of' it comes to 22!). Those who have heard it before the release are talking about it being the man's best yet. Whilst retaining the `Whoever It Was...' feel of one man and a guitar slicing through your life and emotions, it takes that and adds a little more. Beautiful arrangements by Nigel Hopkins, and on some tracks bass and drums from Andy Coughlan and Ryan Aston, add power to MJ's `one take and don't mess with it' sound. With artwork by Juno award winning Canadian designer Michael Wrycraft, this will end up a classic.

5.0 out of 5 stars His best yet, 28 Nov 2005
If you liked Martyn Joseph's brilliant last album, "Whoever It Was That Brought Me Here Will Have To Take Me Home", you will love this! (And it has a shorter title...)
On this album Martyn keeps his 'no messing about with the tracks' policy he took with his last album, but for a few brilliantly placed instruments and melodies that run through the songs on this one. I have been to see him play too many times to count, and I always think he sounds his best live, and I am happy that that quality, which makes the songs feel more powerful and intimate, has been kept. I don't like so much his old stuff that had been messed with too much. The extra production on this is kept to a minimum and is well placed and builds the sound, weaving tunes around melodies...
The songs themselves are great - not one lets the album down. "How Did We End up Here" is full of anger and strength, still with his politically zealous anti-war and anti-stupid american policies lyrics! I love the line "Rigged elections, weapons blessed. Even Satan's quite impressed..." And as a song it has a great hook and tune. Really empowering and gratifying. "Yet Still This Will Not Be" is also great for similar reasons.
"This Fragile World" is beautiful and heartbreaking. "Can't Breathe" again has a great tune and hook, as does "I Would Never Do Anything In This World to Hurt You" . "Proud Valley Boy" is another reference to history and his Welsh roots. He knows what he's doing this chap! I won't go through them all - the ones i havn't mentioned are just as great but I have nothing new to say about them!!! (Except good choice in including "Six, Sixty Six" by Larry Norman - snappy and it really works so well.) My favourite is "Turn Me Tender". There aren't many songs which make me stop and stare at my CD player in awe of what I am hearing. This did. Gorgeous. A master at work who never overdoes the songs (anymore!!). Buy It. I can't think who wouldn't like it...

5.0 out of 5 stars Too much talk, 9 Jan 2006
A fantastic studio album from the King of heartfelt soul. There simply is no one producing anything quite like Martyn's stuff. If you've never listened to MJ before this is the album to buy.

Every- and any- one of the tracks on this album could be a hit, with the right exposure, and the production quality and musical talent on this album are second to none. There's so much space in the sound on this album - you can hear almost every guitar string, every bass note, every keyboard string. Some more established artists have never even had an album that sounds this clean.

However, and this is the only -ve thing I could find to say, he has left in too much of the chat between him and the producer - you know the '1, 2, 3 ,4 lets go..' stuff at the start of the tracks. Most pro's would keep away from that, and maybe drop it in once in a dozen album, but there's at least three examples of it on this album alone.

But that won't spoil it for you. You'll wonder why you've never bought an MJ album before.

5.0 out of 5 stars Deep Blue by Martyn Joseph, 20 Dec 2005
By David Newton (Bedwas, Caerphilly United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
I agree almost entirely with Tildawhisker's thorough review. This is Martyn's best work to date in my opinion. Can't Breathe,This Fragile World, I Would Never Do Anything In this World To Hurt You & Some of Us are the stand out tracks for me.
Martyn Jospeh has a raw powerful voice and can sing with great emotion and sensitivity. His passion for his music and his beliefs shine brightly throughout this great album.

4.0 out of 5 stars he keeps getting better
heard most of this album at his recent gig and was blown away by it. Track 2 which appears twice on the album, second time accoustically is especially beautiful. Read more
