Synopsis
This fictionalised biopic chronicles the final years of opera meta-diva Maria Callas (Fanny Ardant), filling in the blank spots with a what if scenario. It's the late 1970s and Callas, once the greatest singer in opera, has lost her voice, been thrown over by Aristotle Onassis in favour of Jackie Kennedy, and now stomps around her apartment in a haze of pills and regret. But just when it seems all hope is lost, her former manager Larry (Jeremy Irons) hits on the plan to do an opera film of CARMEN, with Callas lip-synching her younger voice in the lead, thus preserving her stage presence for future generations. The trouble is that once Callas gets back in the limelight, her over-the-top artistic temperament threatens to destroy the entire project. What's more, Larry's gay lover (Jay Rodan) is throwing tantrums of his own. Fanny Ardant is incredible as the tortured, egotistical diva and Joan Plowright lends some welcome warmth and wit as the British reporter who sets the plot in motion. As with many a Zeffirelli film, the cast is packed with beautiful people and the photography is elegant. The passages from CARMEN are a real highlight, with actual recordings from Callas on the soundtrack. An opera director as well as a film director, Zeffirelli was friends with Callas for over 20 years and once tried to talk her into just such a project, so this is obviously a true labour of love.

5.0 out of 5 stars A brilliant insight into genius and the effect it has on those who have it , 9 Nov 2006
By Mondoro (Ormskirk, Lancashire United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
A labour of love; a fascinating exploration of 'what ifs'; a sobering insight into the life of one who had talent and then lost it - what is left?? Zefferilli's fiction of a mimed Carmen, using the voice of Callas from her early 60s recording, is the ultimate for Callas' many fans - but would have been fiction, a make-believe. The moral of the film is obvious: we must be satisfied with what we have, rather than seek more. Perhaps the ultimate test of genius is that we are left wanting more than we have got??

This film took a little time to get going, but then reached the level we have grown to expect from one of the greatest of our film directors. Fanny Ardant's performance was tremendous - why have we heard so little about her? And Jeremy Irons provided his usual rather cool and detached playing of a rather unusual type of impresario. But again, Callas was the real star: the greatest soprano of the last century.

4.0 out of 5 stars It catches the essence of a great artist, 25 Jan 2006
By A Customer
With Fanny Ardant in lead this film mirrors the inevitable drama every great artist faces: the decay of his/her special talent. Still having the emotional experience present the irreversible loss of the voice cannot be accepted by Callas. Supported by a friend (Irons) who tries to revive the past by using modern technology both of them have to accept that there is no going back. Although mainly fictional allows this film an honest insight into the drama of aging.
A gem!
