5.0 out of 5 stars An Elektrifying Performance, 3 Sep 2006
Elektra, in my opinion, is Strauss' greatest masterpiece, and for the many sopranos who sing the title role, the most difficult hochdramatisch soprano part in existence. The demands on the leading soprano are outstanding. The role tests the entire range, allowing the singer to explore the bottom of her voice to the very testing and difficult top. The emotional palette the singer must use for Elektra is one of the most complex to interpret as well, exploring dementia, sadness, anger, and a whole plethora of other emotions that if a singer is without, her Elektra would be much poorer. The other great role in this opera, Klytemnestra, is also one of the most challenging roles for the dramatic mezzo to interpret. Not only must she be able to sing over a large orchestra, but she also must be a strong enough character to convince the audience that there is justification for her murdering of her husband, Agamemnon. Then there is the conducting, where the person on the podium must be able to bring out the polyphony of the many orchestral colors that come with the writing of Strauss' very complicated score. Karajan himself confessed to being unable to conduct Elektra in the studio because of the draining qualities that the music brought. The plot is very gruesome, and sometimes, I think vocal opulence must in this case be overshadowed by drama.

This recording has everything that a great Elektra needs. The soprano in the title role, Gwyneth Jones, not only expresses all the necessary anguish and angst, but a certain sexual facet to the characterization that gives her performances an edge over great soprano powerhouses like Birgit Nilsson and Inge Borkh. Her characterization is fabulous and demented, and I find that she is the perfect Elektra because of her vicious characerization. Her partner, Leonie Rysanek, leaves nothing to be desired about Mama. She actually sings the role, and her amazing voice is still sturdy at this stage of her career. Jeffrey Tate is an underrated Strauss conductor who brings all the colors out of the complicated score. I would say that this is the best Elektra on disc, and I urge all of you to get it soon.
