2.0 out of 5 stars Great idea let down by too many details, 8 Jan 2006
Got this for my son for Christmas. I play golf to a reasonable standard and find this game pretty good about 75% of the time. The novelty value is great - swinging a mini club, with your hands attached by thin cords to a sensor, watching the result of your shot, etc, etc. BUT - loads of minor details spoil what could be an excellent game. For example:

I'm left handed - it copes with that, sensing a swing that goes "the other way", but on the screen you still see a right handed player. When I slice it, the caddy describes it as a draw. The caddy's comment bank is very thin on the ground - many of them being simply inappropriate for the circumstances.

On your approach to the green you get prodigious backspin, which I've not managed to control yet - the ball pitches on the back of the green, spins back off the front of the green and into a bunker if you're unlucky.

The sensor is often not sensitive on putts - to the extent that sometimes when you need a 3% power swing, it senses a 73% power swing, which of course sends the ball off the green and into a bunker!

Don't believe the web site when it says you can draw or fade by opening or closing the club face - how you hold the club (if indeed you hold it at all) makes no difference at all to the shot. I can regularly get a fade or a slice, but I've not yet managed a hook or draw, and I've been lined up against the sensor in such a way when not to get a draw should be impossible.

You often get unplayable lies in and around bunkers - just played a round and had three of them. And there's no logic as to whether you drop or play the shot again.

The player gives daft signals to the crowd - as if he's sunk a putt when he's just missed one.

You are told the power to hit the putt. If you hit it with that power you invariably end up short.

The game regularly freezes - not much hassle on the first hole, but a real bummer on the 17th. And sometimes when you've finished a round it doesn't recognise that and sends you on an endless loop back down the 18th hole.

Overall, maybe with more practice I'll get better, but don't rely on this to help your real game. Here's hoping the next version is a vast improvement.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nearly but not quite . . ., 1 Dec 2005
By K. Flitter (Maldon, Essex United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I put the difficulty rating straight onto the hardest level but found this way too easy and broke par in my first round - too many shots are 110% power and 100% contact at this level - it`s actually really difficult NOT to hit everything at 110% power
On the other hand if you DO miss slightly and get 90% contact - the ball goes about 50 yards (with a driver)
I tried to hit some deliberate slices and hooks and I didn`t think it replicated it that well, that said, it`s still a refreshing attempt at something different and will no doubt improve in later versions.
I didn`t think much of the spelling mistakes either, there`s no excuse for that.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic for a beginner, 28 Dec 2005
By Saintlysloth (Southampton, Hampshire) - See all my reviews
Clearly the Kerry Flitter is a fantastic golfer and does not need a game like this to aid handicap improvement!

I thought this was fantastic. It really gets you off of your seat and playing the game. OK so the exercise isnt quite as great as if you were wandering miles around the golf course but if you fancy doing a 20min jog between holes then thats up to you. This is a brilliant piece of technology and might actually convince me to take up golf.

It is a must for begginers who do not fancy going out in the pouring rain and contrary to certain other reviews can actually be quite good for those players who are of greater ability. Definately worth the money and I may buy one of the other games for use with the gametrak console when they become available.

Buy it now!!!!!!!!
