5.0 out of 5 stars John Hackett Comes Out A Winner, 14 Nov 2005
I have appreciated John Hackett's wonderful talents for over 30 years, particularly as accompaniment to his brother Steve, and usually as a flautist extraordinairre. John's latest venture has something for everyone. The album covers many musical genres, yet still comes off as original. He has brought in sounds from various artists he has worked with in the past, as well as musicians that have influenced his own career, but he has smartly found a way to make them his own. Tony Patterson of Re-Genesis, with his Peter Gabriel-like singing voice, gives the songs he has contributed to a Genesis feel. John's voice, in my opinion, will be the greatest surprise to the listener. WOW! The guy can sing! I have always loved his flute playing and miss it on this album, but he has managed to venture into something new. I and many other music lovers are hoping to see John tour America soon, not just to promote this album, but to prove that he is a creative force in music and has much to offer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Buy this album. Now., 2 May 2006
I just saw The John Hackett Band give their inaugural concert, and I was blown away. I brought the album instantly afterwards, and it arrived this morning.

Shortly put, it's brilliant. While the band may be newly formed, all the musicians have extensive experience, and it shows. Their playing is both expressive and tight, and every part is brilliantly played. The texture is incredibly deep; there's so much more than the typical chord-and-melody pattern employed by most contemporary musicians.

The album contains some great tracks, particularly the upbeat "Whispers," the driving "More," the haunting "DNA," the beautiful "Winter" and the perfect "Checking Out of London."

The John Hackett Band may not have broken into the mainstream yet, but if this album is anything to go by, their day could come pretty soon. It's hard to pin them down to a particular genre, but their music is simultaneously evocative of Genesis, Pink Floyd, The Moody Blues and many more.

If you're into any of those bands, you should definitely buy this album. If you're not, then let me tell you a quick story:

I dragged a friend along to the concert. Until now, he has always hated modern music, saying it's boring and sticking to his Beethoven. He loved the concert, and brought the CD immediately. He's had it playing solidly since then (three days at the time of writing), and despite his room being next door to me, I'm constantly asking him to turn it up.

In short, buy it. It's worth it.
