5.0 out of 5 stars In the best English tradition, 15 Oct 2008
By Alfonso Urzaiz Azlor Aragon "D. de la Palata" (Madrid, Spain) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This selection, unlike that collected in the album Songs of Innocence, is an extraordinary rendition of beautiful music that combines traditional pieces, songs by Robert Schumann, Georg Friedrich Händel, Felix Mendelssohn, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Franz Schubert, Gabriel Fauré and a few inspired pieces of English choir music, such as Geoffrey Burgon's "Nunc dimitis" and a couple of well-known lovely songs by John Rutter and others. Also, for some reason, two by Benjamin Britten.

The soloist singer has a beautiful voice and has been wonderfully directed to perform with the maturity required by the songs. Otherwise, I think it might have been a mistake to include a song like "Amazing Grace", quite beyond the physical and technical possibilities of a child.

The whole work is directed with mastery from the organ by Benjamin Nicholas who, in the best tradition of English choirs, has been capable of overcoming in great measure the difficulties posed by children's shorter breathing. The quality and intensity of feeling conveyed by his inspired direction is well above what could be expected of a boys' choir. The older participants are simply perfect, as is the case of "Ubi caritas et amor" by the mystic American composer Morten Lauridsen. It would have been interesting to listen to The Abbey School Choir's performance of "Crown my heart" by James Whitbourn had it been included among the songs by living composers.

It is a great pity that Tewkesbury Abbey School Choir could not be saved. This circumstance underlines the need to own this recording, thas has become a "must" for classic choir music lovers.
