Synopsis

Containing one of the most instantly recognisable intro sequences to a TV show (Look up in the sky! It's a bird! It's a plane! It's Superman!), THE ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN was the first attempt to bring the comic book character to television screens. This first season originally aired in 1952, and established great cinematic characters such as Lois Lane, Jimmy Olsen, and of course Clark Kent himself. By day Kent attempts to live an anonymous existence as a reporter for the Daily Planet, but when trouble comes calling, he transforms into Superman, the last survivor from the planet Krypton. George Reeves convincingly played Superman throughout the first season of the show, and he returned to play the Man of Steel in all of the subsequent Seasons. Although it soon turned into a laugh-fest, this first series of adventures takes a serious approach to the characters, mirroring later interpretations such as LOIS & CLARK from the 1990s. Hugely popular in its day, this complete collection of episodes from the first season of THE ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN affords viewers the chance to wallow in some awesome retro TV action.

5.0 out of 5 stars great to see this on DVD, 27 Jan 2006
I bought this boxset on the day it came out and i'm glad i did. i have been waiting so long for this come out on DVD. i watched the episodes that BBC1 showed. i don't think they showed the first season. the last time i saw this series was 16 years ago when as i say when BBC 1 repeated some episodes. i have watched 12 episodes of the first season so far and they are brilliant. considering this series was made in the 50's they packed so much story into the episodes that they are literally mini movies. yes the effects are dated but for the time they were cutting edge and you can tell whenever you see george reeves flying you can tell he's on a table and that the background of the city he's flying over is put in afterwards. i'm so glad this series is being released on DVD. looking forward to buying the second season when it comes out in March. also the extras are great as well on this boxset and the commentaries are good on the four key episodes of the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great fun!, 20 Dec 2006
I bought this for my boyfriend on his birthday and was forced to sit down and watch them with him. I have to say that i am glad i did as they are great fun. I always thought Christopher Reeve was the first, so i was surprised at this earlier incarnation.
Sure, they obviously had no money and special effects shots are repeated but it does have a nostalgic charm about it.
George Reeves, if a little older than expected, is excelent in his duel role of Superman/Clark Kent. He is extremely likeable with a dreamy masculine voice.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Original Hollywood Superman, 18 Sep 2009

It's good to watch if you like to see how early films portrayed the superhero characters with just creaky scripts, creaky sets and actors still learning their trade. Stay away if you're a fan of computer graphics, but if you like to see how early Hollywood dealt with this type of story, definitely worth a look!
