Amazon.co.uk Review
To celebrate the 25th anniversary of Lech Walesca's Solidarity movement, Jean Michel Jarre performed an energetic concert in Gdansk, northern Poland. The backdrop was the shipyard where workers went on strike in August 1980 leading to the eventual fall of communism in Poland. The setting includes a moving crane lit from the inside, and the hanger door opening to reveal an orchestra surrounded by sparks from metal welding.

After seeing this, you won't want to watch your Jarre in China DVD again unless you pine for "Fishing Junks at Sunset" or want to demonstrate your home cinema system. It's a far more engaging performance with an energised audience and a happy, star-jumping JMJ, the likes of which we've not seen since the nineties.

Musically the performance has the standard combination of synthesiser, choir, laser harp, and full orchestra. Again, the show lacks a drummer and additional live acoustic musicians but guitarist Patrick Rondat is wheeled out for just 2 tracks before making the tea. Jarre himself spends a bit too much time playing with his hair, an effects pad, a Theremin, and symbols rather than improvising on keyboards. While the track listing is yet again too close to recent concerts there are a couple of enjoyable reworkings of two pieces that haven't been heard for over 10 years: "Industrial Revolution Overture" and "Chronologie part 2". Too many tracks are familiar and up to five tracks aren't Jarre originals, including the encore. However, there are still barnstorming versions of "Oxygene 12" and "Rendezvous 4" to contend with.

The video focuses too much on the stage and not enough on the backdrop as well as inexplicably shortening the beginning of the first track. Luckily the 15 minutes of bonus features provides some refreshing handheld alternative shots from different angles as well as "behind the scenes" footage. The DVD is presented in a solid Dolby Digital 5.1 surround mix (no DTS or commentary tracks this time). Although not THX mastered like the China release last year, the picture quality is very good again due to High Definition filming. Strangely the DVD is NTSC and not PAL but most TVs and DVD players should be able to handle it. Also included is a 9 track live CD from the concert.

Not a return to form but the best JMJ concert in the last 5 years and a good quality DVD. Now let's have Houston, Moscow and Paris La Defense remastered please. --Colin Neal

Synopsis

4.0 out of 5 stars Better than the last one...., 24 Feb 2006
It is good to see that Jarre is now releasing DVD's, and I surely hope they will stay this way.

The concert itself, compared to Jarre in China last year, is better; at least the tracklisting was more variable and he seemed to have more fun than at China. The visuals are too better (especially in Rendez-Vous 2) and the audience seemed to enjoy the gig more too. But still, there's heavy presence of AERO tracks, which sound exactly like on the album... but Industrial Revolution / Chronologie 2 as well as the superb cover version of Mury really make up for it.

The DVD.. the concert edit is good, there's a lack of extras but besides that the set is very tight and has all you need for a concert DVD... if only Jarre would release his past concerts in a superb (or even better) set like this. If you don't have Jarre in China, this is certainly a much better choice.

3.0 out of 5 stars Poles Apart From China, 12 Oct 2008
By Lee Lucas "intruder369" (Birmingham England) - See all my reviews
Having read reviews for this concert on DVD I went out and purchased it. Many of its reviews are in comparison with JMJ's Bejing concert in China, both set lists are not far off from each other as Jarre was promoting his release of Aero and very much touring this event for both concerts in 2004 and 2005 respectively. Although the set lists are fairly close to each other there are major differences between the 2 DVD's, this mainly comes down to the sound quality. Gdansk was recorded in Dolby Digital 5.1 only, and as no DTS track upon it, and to be honest i'm not at all surprised there is no DTS here, because the sound is far to inferior to even qualify for DTS.

The 5.1 audio on Gdnask is really poor and lets the disc down big style when comparing it to JMJ's Bejing DVD. There are major bass issues here on Gdansk to which I had to spend some serious time tweaking my system to suit, because the concert is marred by far to much bass making most of the tracks not very clear at all, and some of the instuments that are being played are very much not being heard. This is very bad engineering for a 5.1 audio track making the sound very dull throughout most of the concert.

To compare Gdansk with Bejing is totally ridiculous becuase Bejing is top notch quality all the way. Not only does Bejing have a DTS soundtrack, it also as THX and HD, it simply blows this Gdansk DVD out of it. I can honestly say if you want good quality and a very good concert of JMJ forget this and get Bejing. Because in terms of value for money, Gdanks is only worth a quarter of the price of Bejing, because of its bad production.

If your like me a Jarre fan you will of coarse buy both of these disc's, and get satisfaction out of them both, but to say that even Gdansk as a better track list than Bejing is total crap, becuase both set lists are very good and not far of each other at all. The highlights to me upon the Gdansk concert would be the inclusion of Tribute To Jean Paul II which is in fact Tout est bleu from his Metamorphoses album. But apart from that the rest of the material can be found on many of Jarre's concerts.

Over all JMJ's Solidarnosc is still quite a good show, but very dissapointing in comparison to Bejing, all I can say as regarding the sound is that most peeps who have written good reviews for this DVD are listening to it, through there cheap plastic speakers that are built in there televisions, instead of using an Home Cinema Surround System, because the sound engineer who recorded live in Gdansk seriously wants shooting.
