5.0 out of 5 stars They call him "The Breeze", 29 Dec 2006
One of the Christmas presents I got for Christmas that pleased me the most to receive was "To Tulsa and back", a backstage film of JJ Cale on tour until I tried to I tried to play it on my laptop ... and it didn't work. The screen went blank. I was despondent - I wasn't sure whether I'd screwed up the DVD player, or the DVD was duff or it was a DVD region thang. So I tried another DVD with a different region and it only did the pictures - no sound could be tempted forth from the speakers... I even ventured into the evil world of Media Player and that told me I had copyright issues with the DVD. So I looked on the internet as one does these days and eventually came across someone suggesting that I should change the system date. Which I thought seemed ridiculous as there's no reason playing a DVD should reference any dates even in these days of anti-copying software. Still desperate times call for desperate measures so I changed the month back to November, clicked on the play button. And it worked. Then I thought - "well, I've had this laptop about 6 months - maybe this is a sneaky way of getting you to go buy more software..." (laptop bundles are justly notorious for dumping short-life packages on an unsuspecting clientele.) In which case every time I played a DVD I'd have to reset the system date to November 2006 or earlier. So I fast-forwarded the date to January 2007, clicked "play" and JJ Cale stormed back into action. As if the supremely laid-back JJ Cale could ever "storm". Wonderful stuff. But you do have to wonder about the programmer who put that little timecheck into the DVD driver software don't you? "Don't play in December...." He must have something against Christmas... Anyway I don't know whether this little experience heightened or lowered my expectations but it was an excellent film albeit with a bit too much Eric Clapton for my tastes. You can get that anywhere - I'd rather have heard a little more from some of those people he'd been playing with since the rest of us were not even born or in nappies. Amazing stuff and hence this review. I couldn't believe there were audiences of just a couple of hundred over there in the US of A. When he came over to London (he has a claustrophobic fear of flying) you could have gotten pretty much what you asked for your precious ticket. But I digress ... despite sharing its title with his latest CD it bears nothing in common with it, other than that the CD turns up in one or two shots. This film is an excellent insight into a musician who avoids the limelights, who took five years out simply because he felt like it and, nearly fifty years on, still plays with his friends and has his sister on the tour team. It's a family show. If you're into superstardom and the trappings of success this may not be for you. No screaming teens or gold-plated bathroooms here. Just middle America responding to real music played by real musicians, led by one of the best. On the other hand if you want to see where all those vinyl records in your collection - or your parents' collection - came from, this is the best chance yet. If you're reading this and you can't understand why you should take an interest in someone old enough to be your father, grandfather or your children's grandfather, well I say go watch this. The likes of Clapton and Knopfler weren't wrong. But JJ Cale really doesn't need celebrity endorsements. A cool Breeze through middle America. Unsurpassed... if you want an itinerary, an account of the cinematography or indeed the view of a Clapton fan go find another review. This is very much a personal response.
