Amazon.co.uk Review
Oh, just one more thing, mystery mavens--get ready to be mystified and entertained by the award-winning third season of Columbo, starring Peter Falk as the rumpled but unbeatable Lieutenant. Having taken home Emmys for outstanding limited drama and lead actor in its '71-'72 debut season, Columbo was again named best drama for its third season ('73-'74). The reason for the repeat success? The formula remained the same: intelligent, engaging scripts and direction, guest performances by top actors, and, of course, Falk at center stage as Columbo, the most unlikely of supersleuths, but unquestionably one of the sharpest (the role would later earn Falk three more Emmys between 1975 and 1990). The 10 episodes compiled in this two-disc set again feature top talent from film and television: directors include veterans Jeannot Swarc and Boris Sagal, as well as actors Nicholas Colasanto (better known as Coach from Cheers) and Ben Gazzara (Falk's frequent co-star in the films of John Cassavetes), while the season's scripts feature contributions from Stephen J. Cannell, Steven Bochco, and Larry Cohen. And in regard to co-stars, Falk matched wits with the likes of Donald Pleasance, Martin Sheen, Vincent Price, Robert Culp (in one of four turns on the series), Jose Ferrer, Ida Lupino, and in two novel but effective casting choices, Johnny Cash and hard-boiled mystery scribe Mickey Spillane. And there's even a bonus feature in the form of an episode of the spinoff series Mrs. Columbo, starring Kate Mulgrew as the Lieutenant's oft-mentioned better half. In short, it's 11 hours of solid sleuthing for armchair detectives. --Paul Gaita, Amazon.com

Synopsis
One of the most famous detectives to ever hit the television screen, Columbo (Peter Falk) has become an iconic character in popular culture. Forever clad in a raincoat and chomping a cigar, the disheveled Columbo seems as scatterbrained as his appearance would suggest. However, even when it appears that his investigation is going nowhere, Columbo's keen mind is absorbing details and clues, until finally he reveals that he knows everything that's happened. Each episode opens with a murder, followed by Columbo's investigation, and finally his revelation of how he put the events together. COLUMBO became popular and famous for its clever dramatic structure and Peter Falk's winning portrayal of the detective.

5.0 out of 5 stars Missing titles, 26 Oct 2006
By H. S. B. Harrison (St Leonards-on-Sea, East Sussex United Kingdom) - See all my reviews

As an old fan of the whole Columbo series, I have one grouse: why can we not have a list of the titles on each disk? A list of the series and the titles on each disk would be an enormous help. It is frustrating to order a disk in a series and find it contains all the episodes you have already, and none of the ones you hoped to get.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great stuff - but no extras, 15 Nov 2005
The Amazon.co.uk Review appears to mislead - I've just received this boxed set, and can find no sight nor sound of the 'Mrs Columbo' extra episode listed in the review - its just the straight 2-episodes-per-DVD box-set as with Season's 1 and 2.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well up to scratch, 3 Jan 2006
By A. Butterfield (UK) - See all my reviews

Season 3 is pretty much irresistible if you've enjoyed 1 and 2, and you won't be disappointed. Eight episodes, all beautifully done in exactly the style you expect.
Columbo is all high flyers, actresses, scientists, millionnaires... lovely technicolour landscapes of Los Angeles finery and the most exotic sports cars abound.
And amongst all this is a scruffy detective driving an ancient Peugeot ("I have another car, but my wife drives it; it's nothing special, just transportation.")
As always there are big stars to watch too, like Donald Pleasance as a creepy and eccentric wine connossieur. The presence of the stars is a testament to the standing these 'films' had in the industry. They are very well made.
As usual in this series, you get nothing but the eight episodes: no special features. That's a shame. Perhaps they're saving the special features for the final DVD. Or perhaps they'll be on a separate disc, entitled 'Just One More Thing'...
