Horror Hotel is certainly quite an intriging film. The movie which deals with witchcraft in the 60s in an oldy worldy town looks well ahead of it's time.

At first I was not to sure about Horror Hotel, Christopher Lee's character seems to be sending up or playing a prank on the main female character. You'll understand when you watch. But my first thoughts on this film were that it is just outdated. I was wrong. After about the first 30 mins and Lee's eventtual non prank, the film turns eerie and very dark.

There are a few intended jump scenes that I am sure would have made cinemagoers back in the day jump with fright- and although the effect is somewhat diluted in 2013, the thought of what the film was trying to achieve is still there.

It's well acted and a solid piece of horror. Those wanting the more complete film and a better print may want to check out City of the Dead- same film, different title.

All in all, a pleasing film. One word of note to Chris Lee fans. His performance here is more of a cameo than anything else.

Two of my favourite films are "Night of the Demon" and "The Devil Rides Out", finding the subject matter rather intriguing and compulsive viewing. For ages now I have looked for another film of similar standing but without success, finding most others, especially the efforts of recent years, laughable. Just a few weeks ago I stumbled across this and thought I'd take a chance as it was dirt-cheap. Well, where was this gem hiding all those years? It is a cracker - utterly convincing, atmospheric, and at times, extremely tense. It is imaginatively and stylishly directed and benefits from being made before the modern obsession with ludicrous special effects, absurd plots, and over-prodution which so easily satisfies the childish tastes of today's infantile audience. I would urge anyone to buy this film. I'm so glad I did.

WARNING: This review reveals some key plot elements.

The City Of The Dead, a.k.a. Horror Hotel, is a classic creepy tale about witchcraft in a New England village (but filmed in England) featuring superb black and white photography and some wonderfully eerie sets.

The film opens in fine horror movie style with a prologue similar to that of Mario Bava's Black Sunday - In the 17th Century an accused witch called Elizabeth Selwyn is burned at the stake and as the flames begin to lick her body she makes a pact with Lucifer and vows to return and unleash her revenge on her condemners. The story then moves to the present day where, following a lecture given by her tutor Professor Driscoll (Christopher Lee), Nan Barlow, a young female student who is studying the history of witchcraft and occult practices, travels to the remote mist-enshrouded village of Whitewood - a place with a long history of witchcraft attached to it where the aforementioned Elizabeth Selwyn and many other witches were executed, in order to research material for her term paper. En route she gives a lift to a mysterious stranger who seems to just vanish into thin air when they arrive in Whitewood. She checks into a hotel, The Raven's Inn, run by the sinister Mrs Newless (who is not really who she appears to be), and from then onwards her fate is sealed...

This is a great horror movie and it proves that you do not need a mega budget and high-tech special effects to make an atmospheric horror film. This particular DVD version presents the film in its fully uncut format and in widescreen, with the option of a commentary by Christopher Lee himself. There is also a bonus disc included that is full of extras the best of which is a 45 minute interview with Christopher Lee.

Horror Hotel (US) City of the Dead (UK) 1960

Back in the 1980s I replaced most of my collection of 8mm movies with VHS and I have been going through a same process of upgrading to DVD for the last few years. This has given me the excuse to revisit many films that I have not seen for some time.

This atmospheric and eerie black magic film was made by Amicus (not Hammer as frequently mis-stated) and starred Christohper Lee and the virtually unknown English born Venetia Stevenson who made a clutch of movies in the 1950's and retired at only 27 shortly after making this film. Filmed in England at Bray and directed by John Llewellyn Moxley best known for his work in British and US television, the film was actually released initially in the US but despite the American setting did better in UK cinemas.

Lee plays Professor Alan Driscole, of Massachusetts in the US, were he lectures on the witchcraft burnings of nearby towns in the 17th century. A student, Nan Barlow, is looking to do more research and Driscole sends her to stay at an inn at the town of Whitewood. Nan learns that a witch, Elizabeth Sewlyn. was burnt on the spot where the inn was later built. As the story develops the student finds herself in danger of becoming a sacrifice for the coven of witches that still inhabit the town.

The film was made in black and white and is a excellent reminder of how well the medium enhanced a creepy atmosphere .

First class, well acted and filmed movie, worth watching and certainly a must for any collector.
