Amazon.co.uk Review

The addictive, slow-burning simplicity of Mattafix’s debut single "Big City Life" has gained the song enough mainstream exposure to ensure a giant buzz around the London duo of Preetesh and Marlon. Their inaugural album continues their distinctly urban manifesto, weaving together hip hop, reggae and soul into fibrous, accessible statements about modern living. Against a bluesy backdrop of melancholic beats and dubbed out funk, the pair sing, rap and toast about urban anomie, turbulent relationships, family feuds and lost opportunities. Songs like "Big City Life" and "Gangster Blues" link the deep, introspective soul of Massive Attack to the sparse story-telling of The Streets or the Audio Bullys, while the skippety rhythms and languid chorus of "To And Fro" sounds like a collaboration between London hipsters Spacek and the Pet Shop Boys. Spacious and questing, Signs Of A Struggle has ‘immediate classic’ written all over it. --Paul Sullivan

5.0 out of 5 stars Very refreshing sound..., 24 Nov 2005
Like another reviewer on this page, I'd caught them on Jools Holland the other week, liked what I heard & took a risk on this album. I'm really impressed by it & would recommend it very highly.

P.S. I'm not an R&B fan in the slightest.

5.0 out of 5 stars Who are Mattafix?, 27 Aug 2006

(REAL NAME)
Well, I had no idea who they were until I was watching an old Jools Holland show on the BBC HD channel. They only played one song (Gangster Blues) and before it had finished I had ordered the CD. It is unbelievable with a diverse mixture of styles. Every now and then I hear Finlay Quaye then it veers off into a totally different style. Buy and you will not be dissappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Hidden Treasure, 18 Jan 2006
By Rangersrule (glasgow, scotland United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
Excellent CD. It is one of those albums that you listen to if you need to relax. Very therapeutic. I am not normally into this sort of music either but have only good things to say about Mattafix. Out of all my friends I was the first to hear this cd, and am always weary to introduce music to my mates, in case its just my weird taste taking over, and I end up getting slagged stupid. Turns out they all love it too. I hope Mattafix do well.
