5.0 out of 5 stars 116 essential rock and roll classics., 28 Nov 2008
By P. J. Wear "cd pete" (Norfolk uk) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Disc one Blues And Rhythm.
That's alright mama,Hound dog,Mystery train And Shake Rattle and Roll, the first three covered by Elvis, and the fourth by by Bill Haley. All these songs were originally written and/or recorded by Black Artists but only made the charts when covered by White artists, and in states like Mississippi in the south album sleeves didnt feature images of the coloured singers because it was more likely to chart if the buyers thought they were White. This first disc RnB,has good songs by the likes of Fats Domino,John lee Hooker, Big mama Thornton,Lloyd price etc plus the best version of shake rattle and roll by Big Joe Turner.Racism was alive and well in the music biz in 50s/60s America.

Disc Two ,Doowop.
Some of these tracks are pretty obscure, the best known to me ,The Penguins Earth Angel. But there are well known group names,Orioles, Drifters,Cadillacs,Crows ,Clovers and The Eagles, not the Hotel California band. This disc is probably the weakest in the set.

Disc Three,The Country one.
Track one,Hank Williams,Move it on over, this tune has got to be where the sound for Rock Around The Clock originated. This is a good collection of tunes by well known artists,Chet Atkins ,Hank Snow, Red Foley,Merle Travis,The Carlisles, bluegrass from Bill Monroe, and track 9 "Oakie Boogie" is a song by little known Jack Guthrie, brother to the American legend that is Woody Guthrie.Another version of Hound Dog appears here by ,Betsy Gaye that still predates Presleys poorer hit version,in my opinion.

Disc Four,Rock And Roll.
This set opens with Rocket 88,by Jackie Brenston, now acknowledged as the beginning of Rock and Roll.but all of these tracks would be at home on the three previous selections in their own genres.Track 1 ideally being RnB,2 through to 7 doowop etc. They date from 51 to 54,working through the tracks that were really the first hits, but are now classic Rock and Roll. The last two tracks being Elvis' version of That's alright Mama and Bill Haley's Rock around the clock.I think it would have been better to leave any Elvis off this set as there are plenty of his sets aroundThe Tupelo Mississippi Flash, and we could of had two more obscure tracks.

This set is a Good buy,I totally recommend it.

The set contains 118 songs but I took out the two by Elvis in my title, happy listening.

5.0 out of 5 stars Oh, Yes !!!, 2 Sep 2009
By Anton Coy "Ant" (Johannesburg, South Africa) - See all my reviews
No matter what your taste is in music, you can be assured of tremendous value from any Proper Box Set. If you are something of a student of music, rather than just a casual listener, there must be something there for you in the wide range of Box Sets they have on offer. And this compilation does not disappoint. With so much music to choose from spread over four themed CD's, it's inevitable that there will be tracks you will not care for too much. How could there not be ? However, the well-reproduced sound on most of the tracks, coupled with the compact, attractive packaging and a thick booklet of closely-typed detailed track-by-track background notes - for me a strong motivation for even a SIXTH star - makes this compilation of early rock and roll, and pre- rock and roll music, the best value I have come across. Buy it, and sit back and enjoy it - information booklet in hand. But be warned ! There is so much to listen to that you will need a number of sessions to get through it all. And then you'll want to come back for more....

5.0 out of 5 stars The Devil's Music, 19 Nov 2006
By Richard "Alice Collector" (Blackpool England) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
When Wild Bill Moore cut the song in 1948 which titles this 4 CD set it was played by Alan Freed who promptly swiped Moore's title to rename the new music-music which would be called for some reason the Devil's Music.Maybe Moore had seen it coming as his disc bore a catalogue number of 666!!!
However if you want a cross section of what this was all about then here is the one to go for as it alternates the big guns with the musical failures showing that rock'n'roll depended on radio plays to take off.
It also shows that the music business is where racial prejudice doesn't exist-something the Bush Government should study seriously
