Album Description
"The era of the tenor sax" is how Duke Ellington described the post-war slump that saw the decline of the big swing bands and the rise of the lone saxophone star. The sound of the saxophone became the sound of 1940s jazz and jump blues. These small combos were not, however, any kind of throwback to tame mainstream Trad Jazz - oh no! It was a full on extravaganza of R&B showbiz, as the likes of Big Jay McNeely and Roy Milton throw themselves around the clubs of New York City and LA's Central Avenue, igniting a SPONTANEOUS PSYCHOTIC REACTION in young Blacks and Latinos that was WILDER than and prefigured Rock'n'Roll!
Johnny Otis hacking at the vibes in his wild, eye popping suits, Lynn Hope a wailing in his turban, and was it a niche music? NO SIR! As R&B Chart toppers burst from the scene like nobody's business, times were good and hell, even the most famous singers IN THE WORLD were having to COVER these instrumental tunes with new lyrics to somehow get in on the action...and some youthful coin! Yes indeed - a wild time of crazy, Tarzan-wailing DJs, roller skating saxophonists, crazy cats jitterbugging and jiving with wild chicks! Aaaahhhh - it's a veritable Zoot Suit Riot goin' on out of your CD player!!! You know you want it!!!
A gorgeous CD collection of an amazing period in Jazz and R&B history, contains six number 1s and a whole lot more top tenner SMASH HITS!
