3.0 out of 5 stars Poignantly raw and tragically compelling, 8 May 2006
Timothy Treadwell, a man who lived for thirteen summers alongside grizzly bears in the Alaskan Wilderness, is the focus of Werner Herzog's 'Grizzly Man'. Selecting the most poignant of Treadwell's video footage, it captures a chaotic and dangerous world of grizzly bears that amplifies survival and killer instinct in the natural world.

Alongside the grizzly's is Timothy; a gifted filmmaker who's extreme persona in front of the camera is childish and comic, often stylising himself as a 'sole warrior on a mission to love and protect these big old grizzly bears'. But despite his absurd soliloquies and humorous ranting was a troubled and disillusioned man. His aim was to enlighten the public and protect the bears from poachers, firmly believing that the bear's world was harmonious world; a world to where he was granted sanctuary. Sequentially, it was Timothy's dramatic and over active imagination that leads him to his appalling and untimely death in the paws of a grizzly bear. Even more so tragic that we learn his ill fated girlfriend suffered the same distressing end.

Conclusively, Grizzly Man is beautifully vivid. Treadwell's amateur footage is compellingly magical which remains untouched by the falsity of Hollywood producers. His capture of the wildlife does not hide behind a smoke screen, it is raw and untamed something of which is rarely found in mainstream documentaries. But behind the smiles and ludicrous behaviour it becomes painful to watch, as tragically Treadwell is overcome by his idealistic fantasies and animosity for human society and is pushed further into a state of anomie. His undisputable aim was to educate the public about grizzly bears, in an attempt to show then as 'misunderstood'. Yet inevitably I feel as if I did not learn anything; only feel saddened by unnecessary and preventable death(s), thus enforcing the boundary of human and bear even further.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating!, 19 Jan 2006

I watched this film twice in one day.Not as in depth about the bears as I expected but a very interesting documentry. To be honest, Timothy came across to me as mentally ill and on a death wish. Some of his female companions being interviewed came across as a bit odd as well.Reminded me very much of the series Crocodile Hunter. The same type of excitable person always on a high and you know the animals will get them in the end!

1.0 out of 5 stars Absolute rubbish!, 7 Aug 2007
This docu-film was nothing what I expected it to be having read the description of the DVD and Timothy Treadwell would have been certified had a shrink seen or heard him in time. His whole bunch of friends all appear to be as eccentric and weird as he was and there is little "normal" documentary-style film to watch, and only Herzog himself knows why he got involved with directing it. It just re-endorses the fact he spent some 13 years or so living part time with bears and one day a renegade bear had him and his then girl-friend for lunch. This was a tragedy brought about by the mis-calculations of an idiot.
