All that glitters..., 26 Dec 2005
This should be the definitive Stock Aitken Waterman collection - 20 videos of some of their biggest hits. As one of the biggest fans of Stock Aitken Waterman productions in the 80s, and owner of the original Hit Factory video collection, I was expecting nothing less than brilliance, butI have to admit that I am a little dissappointed. Here's why...Like many compilation DVD's, this collection appears to have been quickly compiled with little thought into how the digital media can be exploited/used to give the customer value for money. Instead of these recordings getting the 'digital' treatment and a new lease of life, it seems the record company is merely continuing to do exactly what they did in the 80's...giving their loyal customers little for their hard-earned money in order to make a quick profit. Whilst most of the tracks on this DVD are of an 'acceptable' quality, a few of them are particularly poor - the worst of which is Divine's "You think you're a man", which looks and sounds as if it was lifted straight from a private Betamax video cassette recording from 21 years ago! I know this song and video was recorded way back in 1984 and even with today's technology the picture quality will never be perfect, but surely it's not beyond the capabilities of the multi-million pound record companies to spend a little time & money on showing us they're proud of their back-catalogue, or at the very least; lay a fresh sound track over the top of recordings which are so obviously inferior in sound quality? Stock Aitken Waterman wrote and/or produced hundreds of hit records during their reign over the UK charts...many of which should be featured on ANY Stock Aitken Waterman compilation (where is Donna Summer's "This time I know it's for real"?). Whilst 20 music videos per compilation is pretty much 'industry standard' nowadays, we all know that DVD's are capable of holding much more. As this DVD is supposed to be a celebration of the Stock Aitken Waterman era, why are there only 20 videos out of the hundreds available? If you were to compile the photos from the best decade of your life onto DVD...would you want to limit it to 20 pictures? It's a good compilation which evokes many memories of a great era and a must for true fans of SAW, but I have to add a remark which featured frequently in my school reports..."could've done better!".
