2.0 out of 5 stars Rushed out for the 360's release, 25 Jan 2006
By Keith Harrison "Endie" (Edinburgh) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is, put simply, an ok-ish game.

If you have a 360, and you desperately want an American Football game, you have no choice, thanks to EA's long-term exclusive deal with the NFL. This is the only pony in the stable.

On the upside, the graphics - particularly on an HD screen - are lovely. Not as good as the previews led us to believe, nor even as good as EA Sports' NBA title for the 360, but very pretty nonetheless.

The gameplay itself is what you'd expect: smooth match sequences and with much the same interface as previous versions. However, remember that that same interface is pretty impenetrable to the newbie. And, in common with other EA Sports titles, there is no tutorial and minimal written instructions, so you'll have to work out what the "Truck Stick" does by trial and error. When you consider that there are six different controller layouts, one for each phase of the game, you'll see that this could be a long learning curve for the neonate. But Rookie level is so easy that you should be able to work it all out in an hour or so.

On the downside, and it is a big downside, plenty of features didn't make it into this version of the game, most noticeably the star system and call challenges. These, together with a woeful lack of "atmosphere" in the way of cut scenes and the like, really reveal that EA were in a *big* hurry to get this game out of the door as a launch title for the 360. Even if you win the Superbowl, there is no difference in what you see from if you lose a pre-season match.

In many ways, you're better off with the old XBox version. But bear in mind that EA crippled it not to run on the 360, to force you to upgrade. While EA Sports titles have a reputation as being very small increments over the previous year's version, this one, other than the graphics, is actually *less* feature-rich than before.

One little thing for all those who chase achievement points: you can get all 1000 of them for this game in a few hours at rookie setting (much of which is spent in franchise mode simulating seasons). They are ridiculously low-hanging fruit.

In summary, if you really must have an NFL title for the 360, then you know you're doomed to buy this anyway. If you're just wondering what game to buy next, then don't encourage EA by sponsoring spot-the-difference-from-2005 stuff like this.

2.0 out of 5 stars For all you serious madden players, 8 Jan 2006
By A Customer
Unfortunately i am very disappointed with Madden 2006 on the Xbox 360.
I have played madden 2006 on the standard xbox which is fantastic, you have loads of new features from the last madden game, such as create your own superstar which gives you a totally different way of playing madden. You go through the nfl draft, hopefully selected by a team, then try to become a first choice player.
You also have off the field tasks to achieve, such as being offered movie contracts, Image changes etc........ absolutely brilliant............unfortunately the Xbox 360 version is very limited on its options......I only bought the 360 for the madden game, thinking it would be a hundred times better than the standard xbox version, But it doesn't have the superstar option, NO front office feature in franchise mode which allows you set ticket prices etc, terrible coin toss at the start of each game and no in game challenges when the officals makes mistakes which makes the game very basic( you'll know what i mean if you have played madden before)
Overall i am very disappointed with this game, you would expect the xbox 360 to be far more superior than the others, but its not the case and i would recommend than you stay away from this one.

3.0 out of 5 stars Almost right, 13 Jun 2006

Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
Whilst I agree with a lot of the other reviewers, I can't help feeling that a few of them are missing the point. Yes, some of the modes that were available in the 2005 version for the previous-gen consoles have been left out in this one. It now only has a franchise mode and an exhibition mode. Franchise mode allows you to take your team right through from pre-season to the Superbowl whilst trading players, managing rosters and signing free-agents. You can also customise your own playbook and audibles.

On the field things are a little different to the old days. Playing through a high-def TV reveals a whole new level of detail. Small puffs of water vapour extend from players mouths as they exhale, eyeballs move as they look around, patches of sweat appear on their forearms and reflections can be seen on their helmets.

The game plays pretty much like any other Madden title. You pick your play, the moves are played out following the snap and then you either decide which reciever to pass to or point your halfback in the direction of the gain line and try to avoid being tackled.

The CPU AI is fairly punishing and it gives you the impression that even the worst teams can beat you if it wanted them to! Sometimes your team is hit by a run of CPU induced "bad luck" whereby no passing move will complete and you won't make any ground on a running play. I must admit that every sport game I've ever played has been like that though.

In terms of achievements, there are many easy ones to be had here. Chances are your first match will net you an easy 300 gamerpoints, with achievements being awarded for passing a certain distance, rushing a certain distance, getting a 1st down, winning a franchise game etc.

If your an American football fan and just want to play American football, buy this from marketplace for between £20 and £30 and play some American football, you can do an awful lot worse than this. I wouldn't pay full price for it though.

4.0 out of 5 stars Even with the missing game modes, this is a promising start.
