Amazon.co.uk Review

An intriguing action adventure set in the near future, The Island finds those who survived a mass global contamination living in a contained and highly controlled world. Their actions are controlled, their lives are routine, and the only hope is to win lottery and be sent to a mysterious island, the so-called last surviving, uncontaminated paradise on the planet.

Naturally enough, things are quite what they initially seem, at least in the eyes of Ewan McGregror’s Johnny Two Alpha. Along with Scarlet Johansen’s Jordan Two Delta, they soon find out what happens when you don’t fully comply with the rules of this deeply controlled world, and the stage is thus set for some action-packed cinema.

Given the film’s disappointing box office returns though, you could be forgiven for thinking that all is not well with The Island, and truthfully, it’s a movie with problems. Its pacing feels a little off, and there are moments when the script does the film no favours at all.

Yet take The Island as a popcorn flick, and you’ll more than likely find yourself enjoying a good couple of hours of solid entertainment. Sure, ultimately they could have made more of the premise, and produced a tighter movie. But what’s on screen usually works well enough, and the two stars don’t do badly with the material at their disposal.--Simon Brew

4.0 out of 5 stars Great action film!, 21 Dec 2005
By DVD Fan (london, United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
I am surprised this didn't do better at the cinema, starring two great main actors with a strong supporting cast as well this is a good action film with a good twist! I saw the film knowing nothing about the storyline, it's set in the future in a space age facility on earth protecting the last few survivors from the deadly contaminated atmosphere outside. Their lives from diet, clothes, jobs are all set out for them as they live an almost brainwashed existence. The only highlight is winning the lottery where you get to go to the island, a paradise and only safe place to exist out of the main complex. However Ewan McGregors character starts to ask questions about their way of life!!
This is a slow film to start of with but the second half more than makes up for this with some great chase scenes using some futuristic style vehicles! If you like a film with a good twist or great big budget action scenes, or a fan of Scarlett Johasson you'll love this! 8/10

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Movie, 18 Oct 2006
By P. Bessant (Portsmouth UK) - See all my reviews

It's always a nice surprise when you see a movie that you hold no real expections to turn out to be one of the best films you've seen that year.
'The Island' is intelligently written, competently acted, superbly photographed and directed by Michael Bay at about 100 miles per hour - especially during the films second half. Lovers of destruction will be blown away by the highway chase sequence which is on a par- if not better- than the one similar in 'The Matrix Reloaded', it's one of the most spectacular action scenes put on film and worth getting for for that reason alone.
A very good movie.

5.0 out of 5 stars Scary!, 9 Jul 2006
By Alison Watson "CatLady" (Fife, Scotland, UK) - See all my reviews

I deliberately didn't read any reviews which gave away the story line, which made the film so much more enjoyable. The twist in the story was brilliant and I loved the naivety and gradual enlightenment of the two main characters. Some great action, combined with tear-jerking scenes made this film an all-round hit with me. The story line does not seem too far fetched nowadays and what I find scary is how close science is coming to being able to carry out cloning. Well worth watching.
