Amazon.co.uk Review
An intriguing action adventure set in the near future, The Island finds those who survived a mass global contamination living in a contained and highly controlled world. Their actions are controlled, their lives are routine, and the only hope is to win lottery and be sent to a mysterious island, the so-called last surviving, uncontaminated paradise on the planet.

Naturally enough, things are quite what they initially seem, at least in the eyes of Ewan McGregror’s Johnny Two Alpha. Along with Scarlet Johansen’s Jordan Two Delta, they soon find out what happens when you don’t fully comply with the rules of this deeply controlled world, and the stage is thus set for some action-packed cinema.

Given the film’s disappointing box office returns though, you could be forgiven for thinking that all is not well with The Island, and truthfully, it’s a movie with problems. Its pacing feels a little off, and there are moments when the script does the film no favours at all.

Yet take The Island as a popcorn flick, and you’ll more than likely find yourself enjoying a good couple of hours of solid entertainment. Sure, ultimately they could have made more of the premise, and produced a tighter movie. But what’s on screen usually works well enough, and the two stars don’t do badly with the material at their disposal.--Simon Brew

4.0 out of 5 stars Great action film!, 21 Dec 2005
By DVD Fan (london, United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
I am surprised this didn't do better at the cinema, starring two great main actors with a strong supporting cast as well this is a good action film with a good twist! I saw the film knowing nothing about the storyline, it's set in the future in a space age facility on earth protecting the last few survivors from the deadly contaminated atmosphere outside. Their lives from diet, clothes, jobs are all set out for them as they live an almost brainwashed existence. The only highlight is winning the lottery where you get to go to the island, a paradise and only safe place to exist out of the main complex. However Ewan McGregors character starts to ask questions about their way of life!!
This is a slow film to start of with but the second half more than makes up for this with some great chase scenes using some futuristic style vehicles! If you like a film with a good twist or great big budget action scenes, or a fan of Scarlett Johasson you'll love this! 8/10

4.0 out of 5 stars Bay's back and better than ever!, 22 Nov 2005
By Kemp "N.J.Kemp" (Northampton, Northamptonshire, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Director Micheal Bay returns to unleash a brand new action-packed sci-fi special effects extravaganza of a movie with an all-star cast consisting of Ewan McGregor, Scarlett Johannsen, Steve Buscemi and Sean Bean.
Here we see Lincoln Six-Echo (McGregor)and Jordan Two-Delta (Johannsen) have been led to believe that the world is contaminated and that they and a facility of others are the last of the species. However there is a lotto that is held that picks people to go to the Island and breed. Problems get even worse though when Lincoln Six-Echo discovers a sinister secret about the lotto and Jordan Two-Delta has won leading to a great movie.
Overall, very good. Sci-fi fans, movie buffs and action fanatics will be satisified none the less. A little slow to start with but once the story gets going it won't let you go with constant action, hilarious pieces and superb chases (Bay's speciality and trust me you will not be disappointed the chases are possibly better than Bad Boys 2). Ewan McGregor and Scarlett Johannsen were superb and to make it better we got two of them and one of them are basically themselves.
I got to admit Bay is back on form and better than ever

4.0 out of 5 stars Good movie, 13 Jan 2007
By Dodster (UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
Very thought provoking movie once you figure out what is going on.
I have often joked to my students about having a clone ready to donate organs should my own go wrong, and here it is on film. Scary!
In the future, the mega rich have clones ready to be used to replace their failed or failing organs. When the organs are required, the clones win 'the lottery' and go to an idyllic place called the Island. In reality they are being harvested for their organs.
The plot revolves around two clones who become sentient, realise the Island is a fraud, and want to be more than organ donors.
Exciting, a bit far fetched at times, but thought provoking given the cloning capabilities we have now and potentially could have in the future!
Well worth a watch.
