3.0 out of 5 stars Like Newcastle Utd - a great lineup, but mediocre results!, 18 Dec 2005
If you're looking for a football manager game to keep you busy on the bus, then at last Gusto Games and Eidos have released their PSP adaptation of Championship Manager. However, ever since SI (sports interactive) switched to working on Sega's Football Manager franchise, CM has not been the same - and sadly, this PSP version suffers from some killing flaws which ultimate ruin what could have been an awesome game.

The interface is lovely - easy to use, clear to read and loading times are not at all a worry. A few seconds at most. Navigating the game is a breeze and Gusto games have made this so very playable, even without a mouse.

The ingame engine is a 2D one, or text commentary - the 2D engine works although is a bit funny at times, but sadly the commentary is poor. Its random - skipping from goal kicks to corners (could happen i guess) or from a shot by one team to a goal to the other. Its a real shame as it hampers the gameplay considerably.

Another problem is the difficulty. OK so managing is not meant to be easy, but at times this just feels out of control. Managing Chelsea I signed Henry - we won agaisnt Man Utd 4-0, only to lose the next match to WBA (a mediocre team, according to scouts) by 3-0. IT's very random, frustrating and chaning tactics in the game makes very little difference to the outcome of a match that is half way through.

Still, if you bare with it, cope with some gameplay flaws and obviously unrealistic features then its an enjoyable experience. But for people who can wait, Football Manager is released next March for PSP, and hopefully that will make this game redudant - or managing Everton anyway!! (only joking!)

A great effort, let down by some frustracting flaws and difficulty. Worth a rent!

4.0 out of 5 stars Worth it!, 4 Jan 2006
I was actually quite impressed with this adaptation for the PSP. Many reviewers try to dissuade people from buying Championship Manager, and I do agree that when it comes to the PC version, Football Manager simply cannot be beaten. However, this game is easy to navigate, enjoyable to play and would provide the perfect distraction for any long journey or trip.

Most aspects of the game mirror those of Football Manager 2006 for the PC, especially the transferring of players and the tactics screen; which is very competent. Also the gameplay is very good, despite the fact that maybe the pitch seems a bit crowded. But to avoid this there is always the "Quick Match" option.

I decided to purchase this game because I want Football Manager to remain strictly a PC game, because I will always believe that management games are the best on the computer. However, this game rated higher than expected, and provides good entertainment and fun to any wannabee-Mourinho out there!

4.0 out of 5 stars Not perfect but much more depth than FM, 12 May 2006
Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
I have been playing CM PSP for several months now and despite some very frustrating niggles I have to say the game is involving, challenging and a fantastic buy. Some people seem to find it hard to take that you don't pick the game up and be instantly successful even though they chose chelsea and bought Thierry Henry. I for one would be disappointed if you could. And yes, it is hard to get goals until you start to adapt the set up of your team, but give it time and the many subtleties of strategy, player form and tactics will be revealed to you.

The more recently launched (and hyped) FM Handheld game may benefit from brand loyalty over CM but how anyone could rave about such a superficial effort beats me. No proper transfers, no player interaction, no 2D match engine and worst of all no option to create your own killer formation. All these things and more are available on CM PSP yet the makers of FM Handheld make out that its not technically possible to do all this on the psp! Shame on you. For me, if you are into footy management sims you want something that is immersive and has depth and variety, not something overtly simplistic and cut down. Just because its on the PSP doesn't mean it will only be played in 5 minute bursts!

I must say CM does have some big faults: you can sell ordinary players for vast sums (amusing for a while but not realistic); the game sometimes goes bonkers after a few seasons and invents default formations with several goalkeepers etc! None of these has been particularly bad but the worst thing was when I played my main rivals in the title decider and the game changed the opposition to another team and then, when I'd won the match 2-0, reported the result as a 3-0 defeat at the hands of the team I was meant to be playing in the first place! VERY annoying, but until something comes along that gives me all this depth without the bugs, Im sticking with CM PSP.
