In many ways this is an outstanding disc as my comments below indicate, but it is let down somewhat by its sound. It isn't that the recordings are badly done, but they are not of the very highest quality. Given the dense writing in several of these works, similar to that in Vaughan Williams Sea Symphony, I find myself wishing for the clarity of Naxos' recording of that work a few years ago with Paul Daniels conducting the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and Chorus. Here the quality of recording is closer to that of EMI's set of Vaughan William' symphonies which conductor Vernon Handley recorded with this orchestra, the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, in the early 1990's. If you have heard those recordings and like them you may purchase this CD with complete confidence, everyone else - this is well worth getting, but it is robbed of that extra bit of sparkle that distinguishes a really great recording.

The disc begins well with `Towards an Unknown Region', a setting of a Walt Whitman poem for Chorus and Orchestra. Written in 1907, it shows how far Vaughan Williams had progressed beyond most British Composers of his day, indeed how far he was distancing himself from the mood of Victorian and Edwardian England. He ignores its amusements and evokes the transcendental spirit of the brotherhood of man. This probably explains why Vaughan Williams career survived the battering of the First World War while many other composers were left morning their lost world. He had moved beyond the old triumphalism that was destroyed in the trenches long before the first shot was fired.

Willow Wood as the real Jewel here, a short Cantata for Baritone and Orchestra that is lifted in stature by the sure voice of Roderick Williams, who is proving himself a matchless interpreter of this composer on a steady flow of Naxos releases. To add icing to the cake the sound has that extra bit of clarity on this track too.

The Voice out of the Whirlwind is another stirring short Chorus and Orchestra piece.

We are then treated to a vibrant version of the Five Variants of Dives and Lazarus. This 12 minute work for strings and Harp is often given the easy listening treatment on CDs, where it is placed next to the restful sounds of the Oboe Concerto and the Fantasia on Greensleeves. Here the backbone is restored to the work, its folk tune origins are revelled in, and some menace is allowed expression in the faster passages to contrast with the radiance of the slower ones. Excellent!

The last work, the Sons of Light is a pleasant new discovery to me. As the notes in the CD booklet say, no doubt it has suffered from originally being a commission for children's voices. It is actually a full bodied and exuberant work of the same quality as Vaughan Williams other chorus and orchestra pieces. Written in 1950 it has clear similarities with his compositions of 40 years earlier, but there is an awful lot going on in this score, with many influences coming to bear, including some from contemporary stage and popular music. It all comes together to great effect and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Choir give of their enthusiastic best. This is one of the pieces where more clarity in the sound department would have lifted this recording and made it a truly great one.

Overall are highly enjoyable disc. The Star of the CD is the baritone Roderick Williams, and if you like what you here on this recording you should check out his other recordings of Vaughan Williams works on Naxos.

In the opening pages of his book: “Vaughan Williams and the Vision of Albion“, Wilfred Mellor writes:

“Vaughan Williams has been referred to … as a ‘Christian agnostic’, even as a ‘disillusioned Theist’: tags which help to define his crucial position in English history.”

He possessed, writes Mellor, “an awareness of the numinous, if not the acceptance of an accredited faith. In the course of long creative life … Vaughan Williams demonstrated that the human spirit, however abused by industrial materialism and bureaucratic institutionalism, lay dormant, awaiting resuscitation.”

David Lloyd-Jones new disc for Naxos is doubly to be welcomed, both for the world premier recording of “Willow Wood”, and two other works which I believe have not been much recorded: “The Voice out of the Whirlwind” - a motet for chorus and orchestra - and, “The Sons of Light” - a cantata for chorus and orchestra written specifically for children’s choir and set to words by his wife, Ursula.

“Willow Wood” is a setting of four poems by Dante Gabriel Rossetti, and despite being well received, it has not been performed since 1909. Though written before the “Sea Symphony” it is in every way representative of Vaughan William’s mature style.

Performances are, as we have come to expect from David Lloyd-Jones, absolutely outstanding.

If I have a very slight disappointment, it is that the recording sounds a fraction too close, especially in louder passages.

Don’t let this put you off: this is a must for all lovers of Vaughan Williams’ music.
