The release of their Waters Edge EP confirmed the pairing of Japanese ambient luminary Susumu Yokota and UK avant-rock outfit Rothko as an inspired idea. Working once again with vocalist Caroline Ross (who featured on Rothko’s lauded A Place Between), the two luminaries here create more deep tonal atmospheres, formed from the natural overlap of Yokota’s fairy-tale magic realism with Rothko’s aching, diaphanous sound-paintings. Ross’s crystalline voice brings in an element of folkish frailty, and though the appearance of hip hop and house beats may sound incongruous on paper, they don’t pop the bubble at all; rather, such elements add to the delicate mystery and subtle experimentation that lurks pleasantly within this beguiling set of Eno-esque dream-pieces. --Paul Sullivan
