5.0 out of 5 stars Modest Mouse Meets it's Match in Mark, 2 Nov 2005
This review is from: Tiny Cities (Audio CD)
It's not often I will just replay a song or album over and over, but having just put Tiny Cities on, I am doing just that; perhaps it's just my mood, and I will concede this is a CD that appeals in the right mood.

I have been a Sun Kil Moon fan for a while, and also Modest Mouse, but it is incredible to hear the latters songs so completely reworked - not detracting from the original - they sound like different songs. Simple acoustic reworkings result in mellow, country-ish and plaintive versions of even some of the more in-you-face Modest Mouse tracks; in "Ocean Breathes Salty", "you wasted life, why wouldn't you waste death?" becomes a simple lament rather than the original's challenging query. "Tiny Cities Made of Ashes" becomes meditative with a simple melody over falling acoustic guitar lines.

Overall, I'm reminded of Neil Young, Richmond Fontaine, and even of the Sundays. Exquisite.

5.0 out of 5 stars tiny cities, mighty sound, 27 Jan 2006

This is awesome. Does anyone do better covers than Mark Kozelek? Modest Mouse gets the best treatment as did AC/DC with his other cover albums but this is surely supreme. It's uplifting while melancholic - it shifts away the anomie with ease, and makes it good to have ears. Neverending Math Equation is perfect, Dramamine is an atmospheric delight and Trucker's Atlas conjures up mind images which blow you away. If they made a film of Tiny Cities it would look like Paris, Texas. Wide, open skies and a happy/sad feel. Pure Perfection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wistful alchemy, 9 Nov 2005
By J. Terry "jack73" (Bristol, UK) - See all my reviews

This review is from: Tiny Cities (Audio CD)
When I was younger I used to think that a good cover was one which succeeded in capturing, or getting close to, the sentiment of the orginal. How wrong I was! On this short (only 30 mins) album, Mark Kozelek uses the lyrics of a band called 'Modest Mouse'. I've listened to some of MM's stuff and found it to be totally different in genre (obviously not a criticism in itself), pretty decent and frankly unexceptional.

Surprising? Not if you're familiar with the musical sweetness Mr K produced on his 'What's Next To The Moon' album. You see, he has a knack of weaving with others' words a wistful lustre which with tender irony incorporates all the wisdom and serenity that is so intentionally absent from the original material.

The instrumentation is unobtrusive but perfectly complements Mark's delicious liquid vocal: nothing is allowed to spoil the integrity of the feeling. 'Tiny Cities' is not music: it is alchemy. Somehow a base metal of jangly indie averageness is transformed into a rich gold of musical ambrosia conveying sadness, sweetness and hope. Buy and enjoy rare moments.
