5.0 out of 5 stars Requiem for what might have been., 3 Aug 2007
By William J. Walker "Billyjay" (England) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
It was slow to get started and I nearly gave up on them but after a few plays it suddenly 'clicked' and has since become one of my most played and playable albums. Every track has an engaging melody and the album rolls along beautifully from start to finish without a hiccup.

The comparisons to the early "Fairport Convention" or "The Trees" are justified as they are mining the same musical areas, while never sounding like pale imitators(or imitators at all). There is a good mix of folk-informed styles ranging from distinctly English to a more trans-Atlantic/San francisco vibe. Does it matter that they aren't breaking new ground? Well in a way they are, as the songs are(mostly)new and of a very high quality throughout.

If I had to say the album has a weakness it is that it lacks an absolute killer track like 'Meet on the Ledge' or 'Sally Free and Easy' but then you have to remember this is their first album. It's certainly better than the 'Fairport' debut. The (female) singer has been criticised for not being as good as Sandy Denny but as she has her own distinct style, and a lovely voice at that, I don't think it's a problem.

Overall I would say this is a very good album that should appeal to anyone who doesn't mind a bit of folk in their rock or vice versa.

Sad to say I find this is likely to be the only album as I understand the band has now split up. I, for one, will miss that follow-up album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Album of the Year already?, 15 May 2006
I heard "Lady Margaret" on the Kershaw programme and knew immediately that he was right: this is a wonderful band, harking back to the early days of Fairport Convention, Albion Band etc. There's a handful of The Byrds in there and perhaps other trippy hippy bands too - Love? Maybe. Perhaps their parents have great record collections that they spent years hearing and absorbing. They are, after all, a band of here and now with hearable influences.

Yes, the main thing is that The Eighteenth Day of May are a fine bunch of musicians who make fine music. There is not a duff moment on the album. Buy it now!

4.0 out of 5 stars I Like It!!, 12 Mar 2006
By John "johnnysaint" (North West England) - See all my reviews
After reading some good reviews and hearing the band on Mark Radcliffe's show, I thought a quick purchase was in order. I wasn't disappointed!!

As already mentioned, there a definite parallels with early Fairport and Trees. In their own right, this is worth adding to your collection.

Is it me or is folk music getting trendy? Best give my Arran jumper a good wash.
