Product Description

Product Description

Drama starring Gregory Hines. Upon his release from prison for a burglary conviction, Max Washington (Hines) returns to his old haunt, The Hoofer Club - an old tap dancing joint. His ex-girlfriend, Amy (Suzzanne Douglas), is now working at the club as an instructor, and is less than thrilled to see her old flame return. However, Amy's father is delighted that one of his star pupils has re-emerged and convinces Max to get involved with his latest show. Unfortunately, Max's old friends also want to hire him, but for something strictly less than legal.

From Amazon.co.uk

With Tap, viewers are reminded of the late Gregory Hines' formidable skills not only as a dancer, but as a dramatic actor. This 1989 film isn't wholly original--the plot borrows from countless movies where the hero is a flawed man trying to do good. The audience is asked to believe he might revert to his ne'r do well ways, but we're confident that the ending will reveal his true, heroic colours. Hines (Will & Grace, White Nights, Running Scared) portrays Max, the son of a tap dancer, as a good-hearted man recently released from prison. Once back home, he's torn between returning to a life of crime for that promised big pay-off, or living up to his dance heritage. Rooting for the latter are Little Mo (a superb Sammy Davis Jr.) and his daughter Amy (Suzzanne Douglas), who want Max to help them take tap dancing back to its glory days. Hines and Davis Jr. are so poetic when they dance that an entire movie showcasing just their tap skills would be worth watching. But the actors bring heart to this charming film, which understands that the line between right and wrong can sometimes be as simple as a tiny misstep. --Jae-Ha Kim, Amazon.com

The late Gregory Hines shows his consumate skill in this feast of authentic 'hoofing'. The plot recalls some of those old Warner Bros. plots. An ex-con is released from prison and has to decide between a life of lucrative crime or going straight. What makes the decision more difficult is that his original dance style is considered too good for Broadway. So, Hines has to make do with dancing in racy night-clubs. Highlight of the film is a 'cutting contest' between veteran 'tappers' including Harold Nicholas, Jimmy Slyde, Bunny Briggs, Steve Condos, Sandman Sims and the superb Sammy Davis. Suzzanne Douglas provides the love interest and watch out for 13-year-old Savion Glover as a hero-worshipper. His brief routine almost steals the show!

The plot is not the best, but that's not the issue, because all of the classic tap dancers in this movie show their cup of coffee: They challenge that they ain't got no legs anymore! This film shows outstanding performance by Gregory Hines and Sammy Davis JR together with some other famous tap dancers.

Wonderful dance scenes, all the old timers giving it all they got. I loved the old grumpy man, what a mover. Sammy brilliant as always. You simply must watch it.

If you want to know the history of Tap, here is where to start, the film in itself is brilliant, the story line not so good, but do not be discouraged, with each of the older performers, Sammy Davis Jr, the Sandman etc.. it is great to see them in action though it is worth while looking up information pertaining to them yourselves. Many of the people in the film have now passed, however you will see a wonderful performance by the very young Savion Glover. Worth a watch? Yes!!!

I bought this DVD thinking that it was tap dancing lessons, I also bought Tap Dancing with Susan Bishop. However, this movie is superb! How to be able to tap dance like that, it was a privilege to watch.

As regards the film, the plot is purest hokum and some of the dialogue is plain embarrassing. There are a few brilliant dance sequences - particularly the "challenge" in which all the oldtimers square off against Gregory Hines - but as a movie swansong for Sammy Davis, this doesn't cut it.
As regards the DVD, the production values seem pretty low: poorly lit scenes with little contrast and low volume sound.
I can't recommend this one.

We were talking about older films and this came up as a topic of conversation. After finding it on here and purchasing it, I can honestly say that it's just as good as I remembered! I am a dance film fan though, street dance, step up, flashdance, dirty dancing etc... so if you like any of these then give Tap a go!

I haven't watched this myself as this was bought as a present for someone who loves Tap Dancing.
Before I am chastised, they have said it was brilliant. So I am pleased to let the world know it is a good present.
I am going to watch it myself so if this needs updating, rest assured I will be back.
