5.0 out of 5 stars A great introduction to Soundscapes, 7 Feb 2006
By A Customer
A beautiful album, and a great introduction for anybody new to Fripp's Soundscapes.

Most of the Soundscapes CDs present material from one particular time, tour or even show. Although all of these pieces are "live in the USA" they span a number of years, and demonstrate a great variety in approach and feel.

Easter Sunday has soloing of the type that fans of Fripp's more traditional guitar work will recognise, but mostly it's the sublime and atmospheric looped synthesiser tones that many of us find addictive. There's even a bit of vocoder on Love Cannot Bear which tickles me (because I can't help thinking of Mr Blue Sky) and moves me at the same time.

Give it a try - you might never look back!

5.0 out of 5 stars Sweet Soul Music ( nevertoolate #013 ), 20 Dec 2008
By The Wolf (uk) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
Mr Fripp is of course a phenomenon.

He has left in his wake a body of work traversing five decades.
Never everybody's cup of chai to be sure.
Not a quick fix for the attention deficit generation.

Some of the projects burst in through the front door,
demanding to be heard.
Others - like this one - nestle quietly in the wings
waiting patiently to be savoured.

This album captures a number of live performances
recorded in the USA between April 1983 and June 2005.

The dignity, discipline and consistency we have come to
expect from Mr Fripp's vision assume a heady coalescence
in these eight sublime compositions.
One man, his guitars and a "lunar module" of sympathetic technology.

Music to embrace the spirit (whatever or wherever that may be)
and the mind.

'Affirmation : IMAC' is quite possibly one of the most affecting
pieces of music you might let into your life.
The almost imperceptibly evolving washes of sound
wrap around like a warm wave.
Redolent of some of Mr Eno's ambient escapades of the 80's
it is a thing of great beauty.

The darker 'On My Mother's Birthday' and it's icy arabesques
feels like a wound attempting to heal itself.

Like a modern day shaman, the notion of music's power to heal
has long been evident in Mr Fripp's vision.
Never more so than in 'Affirmation : New York' recorded at the
New York Centre For Ethical Culture in 2005.

The wavering fanfares of final track 'Requiem : Affirming'
create a profoundly moving conclusion to this quite extraordinary album.

"Can it be true that music might redeem our fallen world?
Can it be true that music can heal our world?"

Two small questions from the sleeve note text 'Love Cannot Bear'.

The answer sadly will ever be "no" but with music this beautiful to accompany us
on life's journey perhaps a falling world might become just a little more bearable.

Essential.

4.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful recording, 16 Nov 2005
By A Customer
I have received my copy of "Love Cannot Bear" from the US and I have played it attentively. Beauty seems unfashionable: "Love Cannot Bear" is beautiful.

The similarities with the work of contemporary and spiritual composers such as Arvo Pärt are helpful whether accidental or deliberate. (I am thinking perhaps of works like Pärt's Cantus in memory of Benjamin Britten.) This is meant as intelligent praise.

Are Soundscapes literal or metaphorical? Does this answer affect the choice of imagery to accompany them?
