5.0 out of 5 stars An effortlessly stunning work of film, 12 Jul 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Carmen [DVD] [1983] (DVD)
This has to be one of the most stunningly made dance films I have ever seen. Following along the original story lines of Bizet's Carmen not only the music, but the tale has been cleverly transposed to the aching passionate qualities of Flamenco. Although you think that you are watching a film about the makings of a stage production, Saura entices the viewer to realise that they are watching a re-enactment of the actual characters in the book amongst the cast.
Absolutley brilliant performances from all the dancers, and particularly from Antonio Gades, who has in the past brought this production to our London theatres such as Saddlers Wells.
A must for all world cinema fans.

5.0 out of 5 stars Carmen by Carlos Soura, 23 Jan 2004
By Ron Clark (Airlie Beach, Queensland Australia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Carmen [DVD] [1983] (DVD)
Wow, absolutely exhilarating. You don't have to be a lover of classical music, or of Bizet's opera 'Carmen', to be riveted to your seat during this movie. Director Carlos Soura excels at realistically portraying the passion and fiery emotions contained within the story line. The elements of deep infatuation, lust, deceit and unrequited love are hammered home by the seemingly constant sound of heels, boots and flamenco castanet's. The blood races in time to the score, and to the brilliant spanish guitar of Paco De Luca who appears throughout as a supporting actor. Soura teases and amazes his audience as scenes evolve from dance hall rehearsals to real life, and back again, finally to a tragic climax that duplicates the final scene of rehearsals. This is 97 minutes of sheer .mental stimulation - the spanish music, the flamenco dancing , the stark sets and, Carlos Soura at his best.

5.0 out of 5 stars Carmen - how good is this film?, 5 April 2006
By Amber (Godalming, Surrey United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Carmen [DVD] [1983] (DVD)
I first saw this version of Carmen in 1983 upon general cinema release, have never forgotten it and been on the lookout for it ever since. It's taken 23 years! The flamenco is riveting, and the DVD is worth buying for the dancing alone. The cigar factory showdown is stunning. Highly recommended.
