Gal Costa has released ´Hoje´ (Today), produced by Cesar Camargo Mariano, as a showcase for new composers like Moisés Santana, Péri, Junio Barreto, Tito Bahiense, Moreno Veloso & Quito Ribeiro, Nuno Ramos & Clima and the trio Hilton Raw, Lenora de Barros and Marcos Augusto. The repertory was selected with the help of Carlos Rennó and pianist Otávio de Moraes from a list of over 200 songs. "They're by composers who’ve been around for a while; some have recorded their own independent albums. It’s an honour for me to have the chance to show the work of these guys who've a hard time getting their music heard by the public," says Gal. Along with work by local Brazilian composers, she's also recorded three songs by Congolese artist Lokua Kanza, co-written with lyricist Carlos Rennó. Caetano Veloso also supplied a song – Luto – exclusively for the album. Another exclusive was "Embebedado", written by Chico Buarque and Zé Miguel Wisnik. Gal previously worked with Cesar Camargo Mariano on her 1983 album "Baby Gal". "We had a stronger sense of shared identity this time", she says. "Cesar also helped me in picking the songs, but I only sang those that really said something to me and that I could identify with." Both had met up again at a tribute show to Tom Jobim at Carnegie Hall in 2003. Cesar suggested to her the idea of recording an album of Chet Baker (which is in the works). Cesar began pre-production a year before, working on arrangements and recording demos. "What made this recording so exciting from the outset was that we used a script but with a lot of improvising in the studio", says Cesar, remembering that he hadn’t made such a spontaneous album since the times he worked with Elis Regina.
