Synopsis

This charming indie examines the romantic quandaries of some actors, models, and waiters in New York City's Chelsea district. At the centre of things is Markus (writer-director Casper Andreas) a brokenhearted gay writer whose straight female friend, Marilyn (Virginia Bryan) gets him a summer job at the garden restaurant where she works, and where she's the only one who isn't an attractive single gay male. Soon he soon falls under the tutelage of the gleefully promiscuous Luke (Jesse Archer) who recommends spending the summer sleeping around as a surefire heartbreak cure. He does, but then Markus falls for Tyler (Jamie Hatchett), the dreamboat Welsh model on the staff, and things get even more complicated. Meanwhile, Marilyn turns to the Internet for love with the help of starry-eyed idealist Peter (Jeffrey Christopher Todd). A few soapy moments aside, this is a fast-paced, intelligent indie romantic comedy that deserves to find an audience beyond just the gay community. Even so, there's plenty of shirtless eye candy. What sets this film apart is its genuinely likable and complex performances: Archer is hilarious and Hatchett is a smoldering natural. But it is Bryan whose impeccable comedic timing and fearless vulnerability provide the film with its emotional centre of gravity. She offers an excellent counterbalance to all the boy-on-boy action. It all adds up to a real sleeper of a film a big festival favourite with characters to care about and excellent camerawork by Jon Fordham that really captures the feel of the city and the hectic pace of restaurant life.

1.0 out of 5 stars My Own Fault!, 6 Nov 2006

OK, I admit it I was tempted by the cover image, it is slutty! It is also nothing to do with the movie beyond showing two of the 'actors'! This is one of those films made by people who know gay men will go and see them because they're gay and want to support the cause so they don't have to try very hard. The script was supposedly written by the lead actor but I think he was making his words up (slowly) as he went along - which can work if you're Mike Leigh but doesn't here. I actually enjoy some really bad movies which entertain with their awfulness but this just left me with a feeling of resentment for the time it took out of my life -avoid at all costs!

1.0 out of 5 stars Ever the optimist, I gave it a spin..., 3 Feb 2007

... OH DEAR! I should have paid heed to the other, low-scoring reviews.
Don't be lured by the professional looking cover. This is pure amateaur night. It's poorly scripted, badly acted and just plain dull. And - as if falling short on these essentials wasn't bad enough, the sound quality is also hit and miss. Lunging from muffled mumbles one moment to TV vibrating Club sound track the next. Laughingly memorable was a café scene which must surely have been filmed during a monsoon - I don't know why the characters didn't just give in and continue in mime! So there you have it.... I wasn't expecting much and not much is about all I got. Don't waste your time or your money on Slutty Summer.
(For the record - this reviewer is a partnered, 45 year old gay male).

1.0 out of 5 stars The name is provocative... , 11 May 2006
By K. I. Quintyne "kianq" (Dublin , IRELAND) - See all my reviews

The name is certainly and interesting calling card, and that is where the story ends!!!

It is a stilted, wooden and not properly developed gay indie film - in which the main character is the played by the writer, producer and director... I think he must have been really low on funds, and unfortnaately it shows in a big way!!!

This story could have been properly developed into an interesting film, but it was not, it was basically a way for self-advertising for the guy behind and infront of the camera...

I would suggest, keeping your money and shopping for another title... or if you are truly bored, doing your laundry!!!

Gay indie films need not be this dire, as a group we are supposed to be more creative... this is a sad commentary on the quality of gay cinema!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Lightweight but lots of fun.
OK The title doesn't really help - Slutty sounds like a soft porn type film, which it isn't. This is an obviously gay, very lightweight, but very enjoyable film. Read more
