Many things have been packaged as XBox classics, but few really live up to the "classic" designation. This is an exception. It's hard to nail exactly why. The fluid movement; the combat system which is sophisticated, easy to pick up, but hard to master; the creativity apparent in the design of the monsters and fiends; the length and depth of the gameplay, are all important. However if I had to pick one thing, I'd say it's the attention to detail. Every hair is in place; every scene is carefully designed. There's plenty of excitement as well - battles which are touch and go until the last moment.
Seasoned Ninja warriors will want to know if Black is worth it for owners of the first XBox release. It is still fundamentally the same game as before. However, this is a game which has been gradually perfected by its designers. Earlier updates came via XBox live in the form of "Hurricane Packs", with new monsters, new weapons, and an enhanced combat system. This release is in effect Hurricane Pack 4, integrating the previous updates and adding some more of its own. If you didn't like the game before, you won't like it now. If you liked the game, but don't have XBox Live, this upgrade is definitely worth it. If you are an NG addict, and played both the original and the HP updates, then Black is still worth it because you will appreciate every detail of the new package.
If you calculate the value of a game by the hours of enjoyment you get from it, this has to be the best XBox bargain available.

The first thing that i would say about this game is that it is hard. That is no understatement. If you are a gamer that can get frustrated easily, walk away. This is for dedicated gamers.
Good, now ive gotten that out of the way, i can get to the actual game. I found this game extremely enjoyable, and i have played through it several times. Ninja Gaiden Black IS NOT A SEQUEL to the orignal game. it is a repackaging with a few bonuses. It has extra content from the online 'Hurricane Packs'. This content includes extra costumes and weapons including the Lunar (a staff) which is very cool. There are also several new enemies and a mission mode which can be unlocked after completing the game. This mission mode consists of 50 or so levels which take place in arenas from locations in the game. They are small challenges but they are challenging. Even by the end of this game when you think that you have mastered the controls, this mode can be very difficult. Your strategies are possibly more important than your technique.
The combat system is excellent, as is the framerate. You won't be disappointed by the graphics. One problem with the orignal game was that the camera was a bit of a problem. Black has a new camera system which works a lot better.
The storyline is not very deep, but the gameplay is varied enough for you to be able to ignore that. There are some puzzles in the game as well as just fighting and sometimes the only way to proceed is to use manouvres like wall-running etc.
Many reviews will say this game is TOO HARD. This is only the case if you do not apply simple techniques to the way you control your character. For example you will need to spend a lot of the time blocking and attacking at the right moment.

Ah - Ninja Gaiden. Even now - some two years or so after its initial release - NG still looks and plays astonishingly well. Its creator - Tecmo's Tomonobu Itagaki - made absolutely no apologies for the game's difficulty level. It's a challenging little number - but for me, that's just makes it more attractive. NG Black takes everything that made its predecessor great and does two things. Firstly, it features all the downloadable content that was freely available via LIVE - so those without LIVE membership can now access the additional missions offline. Secondly - in attempt to appease more casual gamers, Tecmo added an Easy difficulty - 'Ninja Dog' - which becomes accessible once you've died a few times. A game that taunts you like this is just BEGGING to be beaten. (The original started out with Normal as the easist difficulty level - now THAT's hardcore). From the first time I popped the disc into the old 'Box, throughout every finger punishing encounter, I wore a silly grin across my face. It just looks SO cool - running up walls, slicing and dicing endless armies of ninjas, taking on fantastically designed and fiendish bosses...it's almost as much fun to watch as it is to play. Not one for the kiddies or for those who aren't willing to invest some time in their Ninja Master talents. But for those who are, NG Black will suck you in, chew you up and spit you out - repeatedly. And you'll love every minute of it. Buy it now.

If you have an xbox 360 you may be interested to know that the game actually runs better on the original xbox, not sure why but the frame rate really slows down when you encounter an enemy, it's not jerky but it results in a slow motion type effect that really spolis the combat. As for the game itself it's hard as nails and you will want to break your pad in anger but stick with it and there is a real sense of achievement when you get to the end. I've played both Black and the regular game and the extra content is nice but not really worth the money if you have the original.
